I don't mean only the posters but WHY do things take so long to happen now?
Before, one would write, add a smiley - or whatever - hit the post reply button and Roberta would be your aunt. Sorted.
Now, smileys don't appear for 30 odd seconds and when I'm halfway through writing summit, the page jumps, and half my text is missing - so I need to type it again. WTF?
Then, I post reply. Sometimes the wee wheely thing spins forever or the text box empties and I need to check another box to see if it's sending. Other times it disappears altogether, only to appear as sent when I refresh via F5.
I'm getting all wound up now, so could we get it sorted please? Who's to blame? PaddyPower?

The main problem seems to be the delay although dropped, letters, words and sometimes sentences do occur. You could type separately in Word or Notepad or similar then copy and paste into the thread reply box.

You have to stop the page loading by clicking "stop" or the "X" next to the address box. Then the page wont jump around, the smilies will work and the reply should appear straight away.
I logged the traffic before crimbo and the site was getting "stuck" trying to fetch a CSS (stylesheet) file. Well it was for me.
It is still getting stuck for many minutes, i just stop the page loading without thinking about it now

The issue with the forum is the reality of it being 'legacy' code. The people who wrote it will have moved on, likely it gets no maintenance at all.
Technically, the issue is caused by a http call to load a non existent gif from Betfair. The delay varies from pc to pc depending on the browser time out setting. when it times out the rest of the forum can load and then you will get 'smiles' etc.
Fixes vary from adjusting your browser timeout setting, placing a dummy gif in your temp internet files, or editing the host file to catch the call.

The thing about it being "unfit for purpose" or "impossible to maintain" resulted in the changing of a bloody brilliant forum to the far less good we now endure, back in 2010. I wouldn't mind betting that the 'legacy' code thing is how this load of carp was sold to BF in the 1st place. Ironic, isn't it?

Many posters probably prefer a meady ochre forum rather than a high-powered one full of threads which throb with challenging ideas expressed in sparkling prose...the whole being characterised by an abiding sense of sagacity and a liberal overlay of sophisticated wit. On the uvver 'and - maybe knot.

Too many lefties the main problem. Most of them are incapable of reasoned debate and throw abuse like confetti at anyone who disagrees with them. Normally following the lead from their cult heroes.

Even in this thread - the same people (and believe it or not you ARE in the majority on here) blaming 'The lefties'
The truth is most 'not bothered much about politics much' or 'moderate', or 'left-leaning' don't use the forum much under the sheer weight of numbers spouting loads of: Trump is great, or Corbyn is bad, or BBC is biased, or the Guardian, blah blah blah.
Have a read through as many threads as you want and have a count-up of who says what - On this thread, rockinron and akabula, but there are so many more on a load of threads and its why I barely look in any more and why many people who used to use the forum use it either less or not at all.

I don’t suppose the forum holds much value to bf these days. In the days of growth it would have been a vehicle to promote the product. We are long past that, innovation all but stopped, the tech sold off and the margins then came from focussing profit from the users internally, many of whom then departed.

Therein lies the truth, dustybin. Many of the people running it lost their jobs and now the whole forum is a side line being sort of, nearly, looked after in Malta. It certainly isn't used for promoting the brand anymore, I get the impression it is 'tolerated'.
The Betfair forum was one of the best things on the entire interweb and it won't ever be as it was.

Betfair must be kicking themselves that they never cashed in on the potential of the forum to be a money earner in its own right. Look at all this advertising space going to waste. The old forum has over a quarter of the page blank. Of course it's a bit late now, but in the old days this place had a lot more posters to attract advertisers.
