The more I look at them both, the stranger they both look.  I seem to recall at school we were taught the former, yet the latter seems more proper now.

I'll put it to the voters.

Young man, that is the type of response I would expect from that Aberdonian Celtic chap, Kenneth.

HAVEN'T

The apostrophe replacing the missing letter. I don't think HAVN'T has ever been correct.

Yes, but lived in Liverpool nearly all my life. I'm a Scouse Paddy.

Old thread I know but I just googled both and it seems even thought it's the incorrect spelling, there's almost 10 and a half million results for havn't!

Also, nearly three quarter's of a billion results for haven't.

I think I just got it.

Is there not another abreviation where the e is dropped?

What's the link about Trilby mate? I'm lying in bed on my phone and it's awkward to c + p.

It doesn't really matter now for I have the answer to my initial question.  It was a question asking, "This may be simple but which one is correct for the abbreviation of the phrase "have not"

havn't

or

haven't

Melvis posted some bollox in politics early doors yesterday and he spelt "haven't" incorrectly. ExcitedHappyCool

What about things like COULDN'T'VE? I always think that looks really clumsy.
Report trilby22 • January 2, 2018 1:30 AM GMT
That's worse than CAN'T!  Is that a correct word / spelling?  I do say it.

No, I wouldn't want to start a domestic.

How about I'D - as in "I'd love a cup of coffee." The apostrophe takes the place of four letters in that one!
