My father-in-law died a few years ago at 96 after a splendid life which included serving in the navy during WW2, three daughters and several grand and great grandchildren. As the curtain closed to send him on his way at the crematorium, Vera Lynn's dulcet tones treated us to 'Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye' and every single person left with a smile on their face.
I'd have cried!
I wanted the final song at my mom's funeral to be Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again:
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I'm know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through, just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
I was outvoted though.

I have to disagree with foinavon that the service is for those left behind. Imo the service is to celebrate the life of the person who has departed and so having hymns and Bible verses at my funeral would be extremely unlike me.
