Turkeys in the wild can live up to 10 years, but those in the meat industry are normally slaughtered between 12 and 26 weeks of age. The young birds are hung upside down from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath that can cause them to have full-body tremors. Sometimes the turkeys are still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re placed into a bath of scalding-hot water that’s used to remove their feathers. More than 18 million turkeys are killed in the UK every year – more than 10 million for Christmas dinners alone

It's getting near Christmas and it's time for the regular Kenny Mann Turkey post. He knows that the death method quoted is exactly the same as that used for your Sunday chicken, but thinks that Christmas and Turkey will press a few buttons so presses on as usual.

Hello again, blackbarn. Anyone would think that you're happy with cruel methods of disposal.
Report blackbarn November 12, 2017 11:21 PM GMT
I wouldn't second guess other peoples views Kenny, but if it helps, I am comfortable with both process and end product.
Report kenny mann November 12, 2017 11:25 PM GMT
Good God.
Report kenny mann November 12, 2017 11:25 PM GMT
at least most people don't know what goes on, so they have an excuse, maybe.

Got to hope the farming subsidies stop when we leave the EU.
Given cash for nowt in most cases.

Barbaric method Kenny. Anyone involved in it or supporting it lacks decency.

Well, I think blackbarn, despite being knowledgeable, has proved that, aka'.

Loved the Vodafone Christmas ad about Terry the turkey, from 2 years ago, apart from the carp song.

An excuse for what?   Not knowing?  You have described a well-known process for the killing of fowl for meat which I doubt would be a surprise to many on here, and in the wider population.

You continually quote "most people" as if this is some kind of justification for your views.
Report Foinavon November 12, 2017 11:49 PM GMT
Good God indeed. Turkey is horrible meat, why on earth would anyone want to eat it.
Report kenny mann November 12, 2017 11:49 PM GMT
You're quite wrong.

Morrissey, with his Meat is Murder album, plus the graphic videos he displays at his concerts, has committed more people to vegetarianism than anyone else by his actions. Many have said they were not aware it was that bad, so why would everyone be aware that a turkey's end is so horrible?

Also why do you defend something you know to be cruel?
Report blackbarn November 12, 2017 11:52 PM GMT
Aka - A separate matter methinks but I had not seen your post when I posted my last one in response to the loon.

You say - "Got to hope the farming subsidies stop when we leave the EU. Given cash for nowt in most cases".

I'd be seriously interested in your arguments to support this view.  Hill farmers in your part of the world, in Durham, Cumbria and loads of elsewhere. EU Subsidies is not a simple issue to be dismissed as you have.
Report akabula November 12, 2017 11:57 PM GMT
Well for a start, and thanks to the inefficiency of the SNP, they have problems getting their grants up here.
Have to say in my small community we don't have much sympathy for them as most seem well off.
Report kenny mann November 12, 2017 11:59 PM GMT
No excuse for cruelty, fk the politics.
Report blackbarn November 13, 2017 12:05 AM GMT
Kenny - you claim I am wrong, you then spout Morrissey as some kind of influential authority on the subject, who to use your post, appears to be single-handedly embarking on a crusade to convert us all to the world of vegetarianism.  I wish him and you well in your quest. I remain unconvinced.
Report blackbarn November 13, 2017 12:08 AM GMT
Aka - I know you are in the north. Do you have any farming friends?
Report kenny mann November 13, 2017 12:10 AM GMT
well, blackbarn, how about just one day a week without meat, to help save the planet?
Report blackbarn November 13, 2017 12:16 AM GMT
Kenny - you really haven't a clue have you?  I will start tomorrow, if you can explain to me and others exactly how that would work, locally, nationally and globally.
Report kenny mann November 13, 2017 12:18 AM GMT
what a day without meat? I'm talking globally.

Globally is fine, kenny. Just explain how it would work and what the benefit would be.

Cant beat a turkey crown. Goes some way to making Christmas. Sorry for vegans etc but love my meat
Report akabula November 13, 2017 12:37 AM GMT
Turkey as with most families was always on our table at Christmas.
Never really liked it and found it toughish but don't have issues with anyone who does.
My issues are with the breeding and death of the birds.
Report woodmanchester November 13, 2017 12:47 AM GMT
...but Aka, what's the humane way to slaughter a turkey then?
Report akabula November 13, 2017 12:50 AM GMT
I don't know but what difference does that make.
All I know is that the current practice is cruel.
Report woodmanchester November 13, 2017 12:55 AM GMT
...well, change the practice? I say again, what's the best way to kill a turkey? Don't know about breeding but isn't it just enough to meet demand? Chop it's head off and doesn't it run about the farmyard for 5 minutes or so?

Woodman,
chop it's head off and what you'll have is a headless body heaving and jerking on the ground, not running about any "yard", spurting blood and creating one helluva mess. Ringing their necks, by hand is best imo  but in a situation where thousands are processed it just isn't possible. And that's a shame.
