that you recommend? I'm looking for a good one that is 100% silent, and has Windows. I briefly considered a Microsoft Surface Pro as a couple of models are fanless, but that's out of the question now that I have read more about it. They reportedly have a pretty high failure rate, and only a 1 year warranty to go with that. As if that wasn't bad enough it's pretty much built to be unrepairable, and you can't replace the battery! How environmentally irresposible is that? Should be illegal to make phones/tablets/laptops where the battery can't be replaced imo. I want my gadgets to last 10+ years
My Dell Inspiron 13 5000 is solid state and is silent. I believe the battery can be replaced but you might want to check with the manufacturer or a retailer.

My Thinkpad T460 with an SSD (rather than a spinning rust hard disk) is pretty silent.
Don't go too high up the spec chart as more powerful CPUs will need more cooling. You could get a desktop PC and just put it further away, out of earshot.
And don't type anything -- the keyboard is often the noisiest part.

After having several different laptops and desktops, I have used a Google Chromebook for the past 3 years and it is virtually silent as it runs on built in programmes/software rather than hard drives so doesn't have a noisy fan.

pxb: Yes, I have a 6-7 years old laptop which was very quiet in the beginning, but now the fan makes terrible noise:( Now I'm looking for fanless + ssd.
Foinavon: Is your laptop really 100% silent and not just very quiet? It says they have a U-series processor, and it usually comes with a fan? I have sensitive ears :) I did however find another Dell which I'm sure has no fan: Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (2017). Haven't checked if it fulfills my other requirements yet.
Ramruma: Yes, I'm willing to sacrifice power for silence. Have come to the conclusion that I probably want a Core m or Y-series processor. Eg. Core i7-7Y75, Core m7-6Y75, Core i5-7Y54, Core m5-6Y57, Core m3-7Y30 or Core m3-6Y30. These are all 4.5W compared with 15W for the much common U-series. Intel have recently stopped calling Core m for Core m, and now call it their Y-series instead. Avoid these processors like the plague if you just want lots of power for your money btw. It seems like they only are found in some very light and thin computers. I'm strong enough to carry around 2 kg, and wouldn't mind a bit thicker with room for more ports, but it seems nobody puts them in anything but super-slim computers.
Kit-Kat-Dan: Yeah, I know many Chromebooks are fanless, but I need Windows for a few programs.

I can't hear any sound at all from my computer, Mr Anderson, but then my hearing is nowhere near as good as it was especially for high frequencies. They are generally on display in shops like Curry's if you want to check for yourself.

Well, if you can't hear them you can't hear them:), but I think there are some fan(s) in your laptops.
"As the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 has a Core i3/i5/i7 CPU rather than a Core M, the fans run most of the time, and we did notice a few moments where they seemed to rev up for no real reason. However, it’s not a loud laptop. Its fan outlets are on the very back of the underside, so just be careful not to block them or the fans will start "

Mine has Core i5, Mr. Anderson. There are four vents on the bottom and as the base has two rubber strips on it, the vents are unobstructed when it is placed on a hard flat surface. I can't feel any warm air being expelled so I assume it's using convection. There is a warm patch at the end where the screen is attached so this must be where the processor is located.

in the meantime plz stop bugging us with your stupid Questions !

Thank you both for your replies. It does seem like a very decent laptop, and silent or possibly very quiet:) I'll direct further questions to the manufacturers or my favourite online retailer.

Mr.Anderson My model is Core I7 - 6500 2.50ghz with 256 SSD
I've had it for just over a year now & you honestly woudn't know there's a fan in it , when you shut it down the only way you know it's actually switched off is when the lights go out as you close the lid , trust me it's absolutely silent !
Obviously the fan could start with age but not any sign of that as of yet & as you say a laptop with No fan can only mean trouble after so long
There maybe a newer Dell model by now but this was top of the range & are really very decent models they're quite weighty for a 15" laptop but that's testimony to being built so solidly & after a year it's still like brand new .
it's the best i've owned in a while , wish i could say the same about my Sony allin one desktop!

I would second the comments of McMoonbeam. I've had mine since August 2016, it's used every day and often taken around with me in a satchel and is still like new. It is a very fast machine and solidly built. I chose the 13 inch model for its portability.
