Wow what a series.
I just watched the whole series upto and including episode six within 24 hours.
Can't wait for the rest, this is the most comprehensive war doc I have ever seen.

36,000,000 helicopter sorties during the war.

Makes you wonder if the likes of trump have watched what happened in that part of the world and realises that only total and complete nuclear annihilation will 'win' such a conflict.

nonsense, it was a limited war fought by the Americans.
By:

When: 12 Oct 17 09:23
Limited?
Well they sent 3 times as many military and had more than 10 times the casualties they had through out the whole of the Iraq wars

dustybin it was limited because it was limited to the 17 parallel ,
This gave the north Vietnamese a base to continue the war for as long as they were prepared.
That's a limited war.

dusty,

Have you seen The World at War narated by Sir Laurence Olivier and if you have howe does this Vietnam series compare to it?

WD
Yeah I watched the world at war series years ago, that was good too.
This coverage is more in your face than that as would be expected ad the world of footage and behind the scenes video etc developed, also the taped recordings of the president in despair from private conversations and all the surrounding noise of assassinations and riots home and abroad just make the whole thing more apparent.

LFc
That doesn't mean they didn't carpet bomb other countries though does it?
Much of what America did was clandestine at the time, chemical warfare, napalm b52s and all the array of air superiority, the 36m helicopter sorties etc etc.
You just can not but admire the human spirit of the viet cong, they were getting massacred as well as villagers, yet wave after wave after wave just kept coming and broke the back and the spirit of the Americans.
Other than the assassinated jfk and his brother Bobby, the USA had a president who chucked his hand in and refused to stand again and another who retreated.

It's about the practicalities of war, nothing else. You can't pretend that you are fighting a war if you don't go into enemy territory. That simply beans that a war could potentially last for a hundred years.
The Americans had lives to live.
By:
dustybin
When: 12 Oct 17 10:09
The Americans were all over the area, north Vietnam, loas Cambodia etc bombing the f uck out of all of them.
If you mean China, who armed the viet cong, then you could say who armed America, cos they had bottomless pockets in R and D and all the air superiority not available to the viet cong.
They used peasants to transport guns ffs, the Americas where getting shipped around in helicopters.

There was a part in one of the episodes where one of the viet cong said it was always all about how long it took to defeat the invasion as they wouldn't ever have stopped.

If America could finish off a load of villagers using agent orange chemical war weapons and cutting edge tech, how do you image they'd have beaten China too?

There was no attempt to defeat the Viet Congo in north Vietnam . There was no attempt to overthrow that regime ,
It was s war if containment , to stop the Vietcong taking south Vietnam and then in possibility the domino effect in the region of other countries ,
So that us s limited war, of course the Vietcong said that they could go on forever .
America let them do so , it was a consequence of the war being a limited war of containment.
By:
dustybin
When: 12 Oct 17 10:20
Yeah lfc, they wernt even targeting the viet cong and they used sponge bullets too.

What utter bobbins you come out with.

The viet cong was a spirit of resistance, the Americans were at war against the threat of communism, they were drawn in further and further, the fact they weren't prepared to go into China tells you that they knew they couldn't bully them.

They bit off more than they could chew in thinking they could rock up and bolster the south and that would be enough.

They just kept sending their dead home and sending in more and more troops in a vein attempt to influence the area.
By:
lfc1971
When: 12 Oct 17 10:27
There were 58,000 Americans killed and 1.1 Vietcong killed .
That could have continued forever given the fact that America was there to protect the south.
America left , they decided that they didn't wish to be there in 100 years time.and shortly after that the south collapsed.
By:
lfc1971
When: 12 Oct 17 10:27
1.1 million Vietcong killed .*
By:

When: 12 Oct 17 10:27
America were supporting the south in recon role, it was them who started military action against the north and tried to imply the north had attacked them first.
They used tactics that would be classed as war crimes today, and they lied time and again to the world about what was happening.
By:
dustybin
When: 12 Oct 17 10:28
Yeah and upward of 4million in total, and most of that was down to the industrial tactics of America.

America should have realised imposing their will on the region wouldn't work by the fact nobody else would help other than a few mules.
France got their faces wiped as did Japan and America ended up even worse.
By:
lfc1971
When: 12 Oct 17 10:37
Really? It worked in South Korea. There you have an example of the north aided by Russia and China , and the south aided by America.
I know which I prefer.
By:
dustybin
When: 12 Oct 17 11:10
You know which you prefer for what?

When all boiled down the only difference between communism and democracy is that communism tries less hard to hide the lies.

South Vietnam was corrupt as fook, and they were the stooge that America were backing.
It's consistent, the veneer of democracy where all the bagged up turds and deceit is scuttled away from prying eyes in the hope that those involved will be long gone when the truth is discovered.

What a surprise, leftie sides with the commies, neglects to mention how the program talked about the mass slaughter of innocents deliberately by the commies of women and children and the mass graves. And anyone who can say "finish off a load of villagers using agent orange chemical war weapons" clearly does not have a clue what they are talking about. It was a defoliant. It was intended to remove leaves.
By:
dustybin
When: 12 Oct 17 15:49
I said there was very little between democracy and communism, other than the fact one tries harder to lie.
Both ideologies look after their own interests at the expense of others, which was also evidenced by the widescale destruction of villager's farms and home steads with chemicals that clearly wernt tested, they ruined the lives of all people they sprayed it on (and subsequent generations), those they were trying to defeat and those who were innocent.
Just as they used chemical weapons (napalm is a chemical weapon you know) with seemingly no remorse.

Agent orange contained dioxin, the most toxic chemical known to science.
Its just par for the course leaving those who make the decisions on the actions they take, to be the same ones who decide the copy that is delivered to act as reasoning.
They had form in lying and acting out crimes against humanity, ofc they were there just to do innocent weeding though im sure.

no difference between the communist societies and democratic societies ?
Well you have only to look at South Korea and North Korea

S. Korea may not be heaven but it is as close as we might see on earth.
N. Korea might not be hell but it is as close as we see to hell on earth.

That is the sort of society that the Russians and Chinese created in NKorea
And the society that America helped create in S Korea.

Take your pick, in dustybins warped worldview there is no difference.

All I can say to you is that this thread is about a documentary on the vietnam war, which after 1 min forty seconds into episode 6 gives the statement that

'vietnam was the first real helicotper war, helicopter pilots flew more than 36million sorties'
.

The only thing I can suggest is the 36million is the total helicopter manoeuvres, whereas your said stat might be documented attacks (which were also highlighted in this episode to have been stats that were lies)

Didn't president Johnson lie about the Gulf of Tonkin attack? so he could give himself a mandate to start the war in the north?
