It is the liberals and leftists and republicans in Catalonia that agree with their EU masters .
They are the same people who want to continue as part of the project of mass immigration, and at the same time break away from Spain . They are like that. |

Below from the Independent. I can see why Spain isn't too chuffed!
The region is an economic powerhouse, in effect subsidising the rest of the country. Its 7.5 million people, some 16 per cent of the population of Spain, generate nearly 20 per cent of the country’s GDP. Were it a country it would rank in economic size somewhere between Denmark and Finland. As for Barcelona itself, its port is the biggest in the Mediterranean, and the fourth largest cruise ship destination in the world. It also has two of the top business schools in the world, ESADE and IESE, and a tradition of business competence. |

not really
catalonia has a long standing claim, as does scotland those driving independance for catalonia would probably be happy to accept eu migration as would scotland. i think your anti immigration campaign can be better targetted elsewhere |

continued:
Catalonia attracts one third of inward investment into Spain, and produces one third of Spain’s exports. Without Catalonia, Spain would continue to be the fourth largest economy in the eurozone, after Germany, France and Italy, but it would be much weakened. By contrast Scotland’s share of UK GDP is 7.5 per cent, so in economic terms this is a much bigger deal for Spain than Scottish independence would be for the UK. You can see why they oppose a referendum. But what about the EU? Here the Spanish government has made it clear that were Catalonia to become independent, it would resist it remaining a member of the EU. This would be most unpopular in Catalonia, which would want, among other things, to retain the euro. http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/catalonia-catalan-referendum-spain-eu-economic-powerhouse-brexit-european-union-a7975766.htm |

The same could be said for the north of Italy , or any other country in the world?
By:
the spanish government were rather poor in their handling of gibraltar,
and i doubt their true intent has changed there either |
By:
Independence for Catalonians has been a desire for generations. Not sure it can be compared to other parts of different countries.
By:
if italy wants to split then thats up to them, i dont see huge
demands for it |
By:
No I was talking about the wealthier parts of different countries. As a rule , although there seems to be no good reason for it and there are exceptions the north of countries seem to be more wealthy than the south.
This has been the case in Italy for generations. Capitals tend to be in the north also. |
By:
The north of countries tend to be the most industrialised part of the country also.
By:
no one knows why .
By:
Of course in England we forget that the real wealth was generated in the north , greater wealth than any country in history .
By:
The weather.
By:
yes that crossed my mind torque, people more inventive in cold weather, better farming land in the south of countries ?
By:
But a country to be successful needs farming land as well, nothing can compensate for that in the end .
By:
Look at it this way , Barcelona fc is a very rich and successful Spanish club, much more so than the vast majority of other Spanish clubs . But how successful and for how long as a Catalan club, in a Catalan league ?
By:
they'd be champions every year lfc, that would be good. who would deny that?
By:
Indeed swagman, just as it is in Scotland with Celtic. Now will messi be happy to play in such a league?
I don't know |
By:
So the point is Catalonia is doing pretty well as part of Spain , what's wrong with that ?
By:
fairly extraordinary intervention from the king. you couldn't imagine that happening over here
By:
Torquemada
I'm supposedly on his banned list as well Aka, but he forgot yesterday and replied to a post of mine! I also noted on another thread that he ignored posts by supposedly blocked posters unless they were directed at hum whereby he posted his blocked etc message. Like I said, he's too nosey to block anyone. |
By:
Once the EU gets in own army in force they will be able to act like the Spanish government if any state tries to have a referendum to leave.
It was only the brute force of the hooded paramilitaries that stopped the referendum happening as planned by the autonomous province properly. |
By:
Independence to be declared in the next few days or early next week at the latest.
The response to this will make the weekends response look like a tea party. |
By:
if all of catalonia ended up in france it would be the south of country
By:
And if my niece had dingly danglies she would be my nephew ? Stop, that is entirely possible nowadays, apparently !
By:
And if the l was a t it would be a Welsh rock band.
By:
I see we've had a counter protest from those wishing to remain as one with Spain.
As Harry Hill would say - only one way to solve this ..... |
By:
Spanish government suspends Catalan parliamentary session on Monday and two large banks moving their HQ's.
By:
Nicola Sturgeon sticking her beak in saying the Spanish government cannot ignore the 2 million votes for independence.
She does irony well given that she ignored the 2 million that voted NO to independence in Scotland. |

Wee coo sooking up to Taoiseach (Irish PM) Leo Varadkar now to discuss both countries' position on Brexit
![]() http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-41519696 Would somebody please put that woman back in her box? |

troublemakers.
By:
The Irish Republic is meant to be a foreign country. Post Brexit they should lose the right to live and work in the U.K.
That's the issue the Taoiseach should be discussing with his masters in the EU. |

Everyone withdraws from everyone else . Segregation is what happens , but along racial and religious lines. It's the future. Quite probably correct. |

The Spanish state crackdown is getting worse:
The Catalan chief of police, Josep Lluis Trapero, is appearing before a judge in Madrid on suspicion of sedition against the state. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41523250 The lack of condemnation from the EU and the UK government is disgusting. It should be the paramilitary thugs that are in court. |
By:
No one in the international community is offering to broker a deal.
By:
Tens of thousands of pro Spanish government Catalans march in Barcelona today.
By:
The best way to decide if there are more pro or anti independence Catalans might be to hold a vote on it.
Comparing crowd sizes not necessarily the best indicator. |
By:
Sky now saying "hundreds of thousands".
By:
March Organisers claim 930,000 people.
Police say 350,000. The government should allow the referendum and make its case if there is so much support for staying as part of Spain. The way they have handled it is stupid. |
By:
Scotland, serious people voted for the Union. I imagine it's the same in Catalonia.
The anti-tourism thing in various popular destinations will be from envious, revolutionary types. One imagines |
