A man has died in a "police shooting" involving a car near the M5 motorway in the Bristol area.
The incident happened on the Portbury Hundred (A369) near junction 19 for Portishead at around 09:30 BST.

One eyewitness told the BBC he saw officers firing at the passenger window and dragging a man out the car.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the fatality and has referred the shooting to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A police cordon is in place at the Portbury Hundred
David Ellison told BBC Radio Bristol he saw officers fire between six and 10 shots through the passenger window using handguns.

"They surrounded it. They shot maybe five, six or ten times," he said.
"Then they dragged a man from the car to resuscitate him.

"It came off the roundabout towards Portishead and then was boxed in by cars."
The BBC's Jon Kay, who is at the scene, said there was a red car with smashed windows visible behind the police cordon.
A police spokesman said: "We can confirm a man died earlier this morning in an incident involving police firearms on The Portbury Hundred (A369) in Portishead.

"We have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission."
An air ambulance is at the scene along with Great Western Ambulance's critical care team.
The Portbury Hundred links the M5 motorway to the town of Portishead, to the west of Bristol.

How excruciatingly modern of them to have referred this matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission……regardless of whether anyone has made an actual complaint about the event.

I will clearly have to report myself to the IPCC later, just in case I think I might be tempted to steal a loaf of bread from the corner shop later, before someone complains about it.

A man armed with a handgun threatened another motorist before a police operation near Portishead which led to a driver being shot dead by armed officers.

More details of the events leading up to the shooting emerged this evening as the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the incident, made a statement.

Avon and Somerset Police said officers had intercepted a red Suzuki Swift car at about 9.30am after 999 calls reporting a man with a gun in a car on the M5 motorway.

The car came off the motorway at junction 19, for Portishead, and was stopped by armed officers on the A369 Portbury Hundred road before he was shot.

Reports suggest that the man was chased off the motorway by police before he was shot through the passenger side window, although pictures showed the target vehicle riddled with bullet holes – including through the rear windscreen.
