Selling anything anywhere, is an absolute pain!
Paying for Autotrader and e-bay listings will send you broke!
People message "do you still have the ****", and you respond "yes", and that's the last you hear from them!
People say they will come, on a specific date and time, and don't show, plus haven't the decency to let you know.
Even if, in your own eyes, you are virtually giving it away, you will get sod all response.

A mate of mine wanted to get rid of a trampoline from his back garden so put it on the local Facebook buy and sell page. He listed it as "free to collector" but still had a number of people asking if he could deliver it! One of them lived about 15 miles away and was indignant when he told her he couldn't do it!

I advertised my Honda Accord in the local paper.This Pakistani dude came round to test drive it and he said he loved it as we sat in the car on my driveway discussing price.As i got out of the passenger seat the low life stuck in reverse and drove off into the sunset never to be seen again
A client of mine was selling his wife's car for £3.5k.
Two Croatian immigrants came to see it in a van.
The one who wanted it had zero English so the other one said they would buy it.
No haggling over the price, which was a bit weird!
They said they would come back with a cheque and, not surprisingly, my client said he wouldn't take a cheque.
The reply was that the cheque was from (I think) 'The DHSS' who were to pay, so that he could look for work!!!
He added that the cheque could be cashed at a post office!

Most people don't turn up to buy cars because they don't own a car to get them to the seller. 
put my wifes 2005 focus in autotrader for £950 a couple of weeks back,polish guy came next day asked me how much id take when i told him £950 was a good price he laughed & said he'd do me a favour & give me £200,told him to **** off.a couple of hours later a guy who owned a garage came round said he wanted an automatic to lend his customers when their car was under repair,drove it 200 yds round the block paid the asking price straight up.got a phone call later that night from the pole who went crazy when i told him id sold it,said i shouldnt have sold when i knew he was interested!
was selling a vw golf a few years ago,bloke travelled 200 miles by train but didnt buy car cos he said the windscreen wipers were squeaky!

I won a new Ford Escot in a draw over 20 years ago.
It took about three months to sell it, at much lower than list.
How many miles on it? Nil, it is new.
What colour is it? You can pick the colour as I haven't collected it from the dealer.
Does it drive well? It is new, and hasn't been supplied by the dealer yet.

Bought my daughter a new car, but had to sell her Clio privately.
When I bought it, it was in the showroom (not outside) and looked like new!
Still very low miles, and had a tiny paint defect, that few would have seen.
Two people initially came to view, and didn't even make an offer!
Then had a call from someone in Birmingham (I'm in North Yorkshire).
He wanted to replace his mother's identical car, that was written off, and they drove all that way, and bought it without haggling.
So it's not always bad news!

Last time I sold one privately was 22 years ago. Couldn't imagine it now.
If you write off your car you get full market value normally paid within a week and hire car until you do

Sold mine on autotrader last year for £2000 , £500 more than wbac. Got paid in cash -no problems.
A hot bed for selling cars is outside my house, a major trunk road. Sold loads from there, with no problems. If only i was interested in Cars.I could have made a packet over the 33 years i have lived here.

I remember selling an Alfa back in about 1990 for 2.5k. A bloke who came to look at it was very keen but kept pointing out to me all the rust spots. I agreed with him. That's why it's 2.5k and not 10k. He couldn't seem to grasp this concept. This went on for about half an hour till I said 'look I gotta go. Things to do.' He came back the next day and handed over the 2.5.
Sold me wife's old Escort in about 1999. Put an ad in the local rag. Bloke phoned up and asked if I could bring it to a pub car park in town. I agreed. I wanted £150. As soon as I got there he said will you take £125. I said OK. I said did he want

It was a great car but had been in an accident, hit from the side, bought it back from the insurer, and got it repaired nicely but the Mrs didn't want it any more.
sell classics privately all the time, buy at auction, never have a problem
Loads of people don't show up. Some have a look at the car if you've got it parked outside and if they don't like it that just move on.

not much to it really, attend one of the better classic car auctions, H&H are ok, as are ACA at Norwich but there are others
do your homework, buy on condition try and get something with history and signs of good restoration or in original unmolested state
recent stuff i've seen, merc Sl sold for 12k next day saw it up for mid 20s in the trade, similar on anything 60s - 70s because those are the people now chasing their youth, fords, alfas, some 80s hot hatches, all still affordable but going up in price,
auction price can be 40-50% of trade price, so i pitch between the two, currently have a lancia fulvia i bought which is nearly ready to go but have already sold it without advertising
next ones to watch and already going are alfa gtv especially v6, 80s lotus, tvr also strengthening despite their issues and will rise further when tvr relaunch the new cars

if you advertise 150 quid cars you get 100 quid buyers in my experience
I don't really know what I'm talking about here just spitballing but an auction for classics aren't you in competition with a load of buyers who know exactly what a classic is worth?
of course you are, same as any auction for anything which is why the first thing i wrote was do your homework
if the price goes above where the trade want to be because they need to do work on the car, supply a warranty, marketing, premises, staff whatever, they won't want it and there's still a level at which you can buy which is cheaper than you'd pay elsewhere
the trade look on it as metal, unless they have a buyer in mind and are acting on instruction they won't over bid, if they buy into a problem there's no margin in it for them as a trader

Elise -don't you get people noticing that you've only had it for three months and assuming that there must be seriously wrong with it or you'd be keeping it?
Good on you Elise, a mate use to do a similar thing with jewelry at auction. Most of the dealers are working on the daily scrap gold price and not on the saleability of the piece. He found he could make a decent profit on certain items which he could sell on.
I read somewhere a few years ago that a guy wanted to give away a fridge that was quite old, but clean and in good working condition. He just wanted it out of the house as quickly as possible, so he placed it in the front garden and put a sign on it which offered 'FREE TO COLLECTOR'. After about a month and not a sign of any interest or takers, he changed the sign to 'FOR SALE - £50 TO COOLECT'.

I've been looking at a 1999 S Type Jag low kms on ebay for $750 current bid. Was interested because I like Jags and it's very cheap so I contacted the seller and organised to have a look at it. So I check it out. First thing. Paint is sun damaged and needs a respray. Drivers side seat has noticeable cracks. Then the owner tells me it has a battery drain problem. That's common with S Types. Could be easy. Could be a nightmare. Car is unregistered. Costs $1400 to get an unregistered car registered. A 1999 S Type that needs a respray fully registered and running I reckon would be worth $2500-3000. It's just not worth the bother. There's no profit in it. A project car. It's about $1200 now on ebay.
Sounds like, you have got to get it from the USA also?
