What a gem. Films that never see the light of day anywhere else, and with some you'll be glad, but I'm glad Virgin got it a couple of months ago as I was preparing to change to Sky for it.
Tell your parents and grand-parents. They'll thank you for it.
Superb movie at 10pm on the brilliant Talking Pictures channel.
Last Holiday-Alec Guinness 1950

Has a wonderful time, gets offered business deals and has good fortune in the romance and gambling stakes. "If only I'd done this earlier". Then he finds out that it isn't an incureable disease after all and he can take up the business offers and live a life of comfort. Terrific film with the twist of all twists in the tail.

Yes, I watched it Kenny - very good. The tone was a bit "it's a wonderful life".
Did you see the public information documentary before it called "Six candles" on the dangers of driving. Made me laugh.

The best thing about this channel(apart from them showing Laurel and Hardy) is that they do not keep showing the same 200 films that dominate every other channel. Not all classics but at least they are different. Watched Breaking Away(1979) , this great film even won an Oscar for best Original screenplay , but I haven't seen it shown anywhere else.

Watched a low-budget holiday camp/cabaret film starring Reg Varney from 'On The Buses'
You know what, in a tragic, serious role he was pretty fantastic.

I saw some of that Poppy', and Reg was excellent, as was Sid James in Last Holiday, mentioned above. A fine actor.
626, I've recorded Breaking Away as it had 4-4 stars, and excellent reviews on IMDb.
Gin, if "Six Candles" was part of the "Glimpses" series of short documentaries I'll have recorded that too.
Brilliant film at midnight tonight. Room At The Top, with Laurence Harvey, filmed in Bradford, boy how it's changed since this was made. :-(

The Human Jungle with Herbert Lom is being repeated starting in 3 minutes. All the episodes I think.
I guess it will still be very watchable after 54 years.

THE NIGHT MY NUMBER CAME UP (1955) Article 2129 by Dave Sindelar Viewing Date: 1-13-2007 Posting Date: 6-11-2007 Directed by Leslie Norman Featuring Michael Redgrave, Sheila Sim, Alexander Knox
A man relates to a group of people a dream of his in which some of them are involved in a plane accident. The people begin to get nervous when the details of the dream start coming true in a flight to Tokyo.
I really have to give credit to this neat little thriller; it takes one of the hoariest of foreshadowing plot devices (the precognitive dream) and breathes new life into it. What makes this one special is that it is deeply concerned with how knowledge of the dream affects the behavior of those that have it. The cast is uniformly excellent, with special praise going to Alexander Knox as the man who feels most nervous about the dream coming true. The various reactions of the characters to the knowledge helps make it interesting; there are those who don’t know, those who don’t believe but still are hedging their bets, and those who do believe, and those who see it as a joke. A party scene on the ground after the first leg of the trip is especially memorable, as the departure of two characters makes it seem as if the dream won’t come true only to have two new characters enter that make it seem all the more likely; take note of the song being sung when Knox’s character discovers this. It’s a wonderful and suspenseful movie, with a great ending line. Highly recommended.

Seance On A Wet Afternoon 6pm has brilliant reviews.
I remember taking a 14 year old chick to see this at the Savoy, Stanningley Leeds. Didn't see much of it though. Spent most of the time trying to unhook her bra. lol
Hope she doesn't report it after all this time, but you never know. :-(

Had a quick dip into the film when it was on today (i.e. 'Seance on a..'), and I noticed the picture quality was a bit grainier compared to the last time I saw it. This is possibly one of the gripes with this channel, that they don't always use the most pristine prints available (no doubt they are saving money by doing this). But this seems to be the case with most of the free movie channels (apart from Film4, who always tend to have decent prints). The last time I saw 'Seance On A Wet Afternoon' I think it was on BBC2 (or possibly TCM) and the picture quality was much better. Still, you can't have everything. As someone noted before about this channel, they tend to show films you will not find on other channels, and there is always a gem to be found here and there. Three that have stuck in the mind are: "Americana" (a film that David Carradine started in 1973 and completed in 1983!), "Scarlet Street" and "Endless Night". May never have seen these films if it wasn't for this channel. But there was one other gripe I used to have with the Talking Pictures channel, and that was the poor way in which they would cut for an ad break. I think they've improved recently, but in the early days they would sometimes cut too near the end of a piece dialogue, such that in some cases you would not hear the final word of the actor's line! Still, it's a hundred times better than Sky Movies (a total rip off!) and it's free - and you can't fault that!

You are quite right about the grainyness, but some of them are fine, and the average age of the films is probably 60 years, and it is very much a niche channel, but isn't it great to see a small compamy actually investing money in a niche?

Totally agree Kenny, it's good to see this sort of channel out there.
It's actually probably a good thing that it's not a HD channel, as the poor quality reels would show up even worse. And of course the new flat screen tvs are less than flattering just as they are, when it comes to the old pictures. That's probably why I still haven't got rid of my old widescreen tube: my older DVDs show up much better on the tube screen than the LCD screen (though sadly the speakers are on their way out ). There are people out there trying to restore the old films and create new masters, but it's a race against time and they'll probably never save them all. It's a painstakingly slow process. I guess they have to be selective and no doubt the more revered films will be at the top of the list. Of course a lot also depends on the quality of film used at the time, how they were stored etc. It's good for the industry that people like Martin Scorsese are dedicated to preserving & restoring the old films. Check out the story of 'Wake In Fright' (there are some good pieces on YouTube). It's an amazing story of how this film was nearly lost forever, but saved at virtually the last minute, restored and re-released. The film has since appeared on Film4, and is well worth seeing if you get a chance (though beware the kangaroo hunting scene!)

Interesting reading, you obviously know your stuff. I'll check that out for sure.
I'm still here watching an old John Payne film, and jolly good it is too.
Have you seen the works of Mitchell and Kenyon. Old, no, ancient film found in a basement by shopfitters about 15 years ago, and painstakingly restored.Quite outstanding and well over 100 years old.

Cheers for the link Kenny, not encountered Mitchell and Kenyon works before so will definitely check them out on YouTube. Hats off to the people who do all the hard work restoring these films, it must be one heck of a job (though no doubt they get duly paid). (p.s. don't know much stuff at all really, just occasionally come across something interesting and 'some' of it sticks in the memory...just wish I could remember important stuff, like not to bet on here when there are bills to be paid! Oh well, live and not learn as they say!) (p.p.s that John Payne film must have been on late! I'm also doing too much of that recently, staying up too late when really should be getting some decent 'shut-eye'!)
