Those that are invested into the belief look to fill the shoes with the entity you call jesus.
So in that respect, the prophecy becomes realised....but only to those who believe it was.

Perhaps too they are the type who interprets from a collection of material that was edited together to mean something it perhaps was never intended to mean, and that they, like you believe me to be screwed.

We are fundementally no closer to establishing reason or source, which leads the inquisitive to continually ask the questions and perhaps default on the simplest answer.....just as those sat around in caves did, who had far fewer distractions and who came up with the most basic of descriptions as a result.

There could very well be a creator, of sorts it we consider the fact something exists (whether it does or not is debatable) but religion itself is just early man's reasoning based on information even more limited than we have now.

If such a creator is deemed to exist in a form that we would refer to as having consciousness then it could quite concievably be that it looks upon religion with the same incredulity as do atheists.

It was quite different to the usual kill or be killed, and therefore withstood.

You can see why it retained value to people who couldnt answer the very questions of their own being.

If you believe something is greater than the sum of its parts, then for all intents and purpose....it is.

The popular effect of something surviving through time is perhaps based on how likely the individuals think a theory to be true.

There is a distinct relationship however, that as time passes and more developments are made (which could signify greater knowledge) that religion diminishes.
