metal detecting

On occassion, Spot.  Bought what I thought was a decent one ten years ago for circa £100 but the instructions are gobboldygook (very poorly translated English) and I can't suss how to work it very well.

It did help me out immensely one time I lost my keys in the snow though!

Had a few goes at it a while back. Got one off eebay for about 40 quid - new!

Basic, but did work well. Found one or two interesting things on beaches, in woodland, etc.

Got to get permission in certain areas and sites but it's a nice hobby and, you never know, you might get lucky.

Got talking to a bloke who used to trawl beaches after sunny (or bank holiday) weekends and he reckoned he made a packet.

You need plenty of patience and decent weather. Might have another go meself now you've brought it up, Spot.

I had a metal detector once. It was just a phase, didn't last long in fact you could say it was just a mere blip

It's something i keep getting an itch to do. Been playing golf for the last 15 years, now getting aching knees and elbows after playing 3 times a week.I thought i would have a go at metal detecting.
When i started playing golf, i started with rubbish clubs,after spending about 4k on clubs and equipment over the years, the best i ever got to was a 12 Hcp.
So if i step up to buy a metal detector, i want the best out there, i don't want to go out with a rubbish machine.Anyone tried the Nokta Impact machine and the Whites TRX Pinpointer?

I think the Nokta's about 800 quid, Spot.

You can get a decent "starter" type for just under a hundred and you'll be surprised how good all of them are.
You'll need to practise quite a bit because there's a real knack to it so I wouldn't fork out a lot of money until you know you're gonna get into it. I mean, you might not even like it!

I recently borrowed one after watching the fantastic BBC series 'Detectorists'...I haven't used it yet! But am motivated again after reading this thread. I'm not so sure how good it is though...it's all in the sweeping motion, so they say...

Give it a go, Pauly! You might feel a bit daft to start with but it's a bit of fun. Especially when you find something a few yards away from a guy with umpteen quid's worth of gear strapped to his back, headphones, antenna, etc.

Can't say I've heard of the Grifon, Spot. But a tenner! If it's in working order - great!

The crown estate stuff can be a bit of a drag but loads of landowners, etc don't mind you
going on their property if you ask first. And their are rules about metal detecting within certain distances
of ancient monuments, etc.
