Not much coverage of this as the police did their job this weekend.

Looking on Twitter alot of people call those protesting for free speech 'Nazis'.

I just do not understand how it can be Nazi to call for free speech.

Since Trump got elected the far left are having a complete meltdown.
Report pxb • August 19, 2017 11:13 PM BST
In the USA everyone's right to free speech is protected by the constitution. Including 'Nazis'. Whatever that word means these days.

1984 and Nuspeak is turning out to be remarkably prophetic.
Report moisok • August 19, 2017 11:17 PM BST
opposition will be silenced - a favourite nazi quote

seems like the alt left have adopted that

that sure is a good 'un
Report Get me a drink • August 20, 2017 10:18 AM BST
From the 'alt-left' point of view, if you desire free speech, what you're really wanting is to give nazis a platform to speak. Therefore you're a nazi sympathizer. They won't entertain other explanations - to them they're just feeble excuses.

That's the way I think their minds work. Crazy
Report InsiderTrader • August 20, 2017 10:23 AM BST
Around 100 people turned up to rally in favour of free speech.

It would not have even been mentioned in the news had 40,000 not turned up to protest against free speech.

The counter protestors are giving the very people they want to gag a voice.
Report A_T • August 20, 2017 10:24 AM BST
"free speech" here just means those wanting to express hatred of other races and creeds. seems entirely reasonable to protest against this -  that is free speech in itself

do you really expect bigotry to go unchallenged? this seems to be what you lot want.
Report Get me a drink • August 20, 2017 10:31 AM BST
Next they'll be saying people should't be allowed to vote, because we get presidents like Trump elected. Crazy
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 10:32 AM BST
people can only be what they are, you can`t lump together races and creeds, they are not the same thing.
Report A_T • August 20, 2017 10:36 AM BST
thousands rallied to express their opposition to bigotry. sounds like frees speech to me
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 10:39 AM BST
that's ok, as long as they don`t become violent and as long as the police are not needed to separate them from a peaceful rally.
if the police are needed that means they are not entitled to be there, they don`t deserve to be there if they can`t behave properly.
Report A_T • August 20, 2017 10:45 AM BST
police are always required to steward large gatherings - would be the height of foolishness for them to do otherwise
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 10:51 AM BST
not really, it just requires people to behave in a polite way and within the law. if some don`t ?
give them a criminal record, and jail them.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 10:56 AM BST
if a legal rally is proceeding legally and peacefully, and some people are attempting to pounce like angry dogs and interfere and stop that rally, and the police have to intervene to maintain peace and order
then the police should arrest and those people should be prosecuted.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 11:01 AM BST
it is better to hear what people say, then you know what type of people they are.
Report InsiderTrader • August 20, 2017 11:08 AM BST
There are a number if things in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1tEpjmFH9g

But it is the only the far right that protest.

Where are the liberals?
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 11:18 AM BST
if that sort of thing is allowed without thousands of leftists protesting and forming a counter demonstration, something seems wrong.
Report PorcupineorPineapple • August 20, 2017 3:22 PM BST
AT at 10.36 has the correct answer. Free speech doesn't include opposing fascism for some on here though obviously.
Report Injera • August 20, 2017 3:36 PM BST
We need to be careful banding words around.

Fascists are against democracy. In other words they oppose the will of the people.

Ma Clinton rejected the result last November as did countless of her supporters. Blair etc etc rejected the Brexit vote. To most Muslims democracy is an anathema.

The Cambridge dictionary says a bigot is : a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who does not like other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life.

So that's people on all sides of political and social debate then.

To suggest the so called far right have a monopoly on bigotry and fascism is rather inaccurate.Grin
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:40 PM BST
I don't think fascists are against democracy, democracy is believing in the same basic fundamental principles and ideals, not different ones.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:42 PM BST
inevitably democracy is dependent on people being the same not different.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:46 PM BST
that is why religion and customs and political beliefs and social norms are so important, they have to be pretty much the same otherwise you cannot have democracy.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:48 PM BST
can you have a successful society that is multi cultural and with differing religious beliefs?
it`s never been done before and is likely to be impossible.
Report Injera • August 20, 2017 3:49 PM BST
Fascism is a form of government which is a type of one-party dictatorship. Fascists are against democracy. They work for a totalitarian one-party state. ... Such a state is led by a strong leader—such as a dictator and a martial government..

- decent definition from the interweb.

Is the unelected EU a type of fascism?
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:52 PM BST
that`s been the sort of government every successful country has had throughout history.
Report lfc1971 • August 20, 2017 3:54 PM BST
the party merely represents the people, what the people believe how they want to live.
you can only know that if people believe in the same few basic things.
