Not much coverage of this as the police did their job this weekend.

Looking on Twitter alot of people call those protesting for free speech 'Nazis'.

I just do not understand how it can be Nazi to call for free speech.

In the USA everyone's right to free speech is protected by the constitution. Including 'Nazis'. Whatever that word means these days.

1984 and Nuspeak is turning out to be remarkably prophetic.

opposition will be silenced - a favourite nazi quote

seems like the alt left have adopted that

that sure is a good 'un

From the 'alt-left' point of view, if you desire free speech, what you're really wanting is to give nazis a platform to speak. Therefore you're a nazi sympathizer. They won't entertain other explanations - to them they're just feeble excuses.

That's the way I think their minds work. Crazy

Around 100 people turned up to rally in favour of free speech.

It would not have even been mentioned in the news had 40,000 not turned up to protest against free speech.

The counter protestors are giving the very people they want to gag a voice.

"free speech" here just means those wanting to express hatred of other races and creeds. seems entirely reasonable to protest against this -  that is free speech in itself

do you really expect bigotry to go unchallenged? this seems to be what you lot want.

Next they'll be saying people should't be allowed to vote, because we get presidents like Trump elected. Crazy

people can only be what they are, you can`t lump together races and creeds, they are not the same thing.

thousands rallied to express their opposition to bigotry. sounds like frees speech to me

that's ok, as long as they don`t become violent and as long as the police are not needed to separate them from a peaceful rally.
if the police are needed that means they are not entitled to be there, they don`t deserve to be there if they can`t behave properly.

police are always required to steward large gatherings - would be the height of foolishness for them to do otherwise
By:

not really, it just requires people to behave in a polite way and within the law. if some don`t ?
give them a criminal record, and jail them.

if a legal rally is proceeding legally and peacefully, and some people are attempting to pounce like angry dogs and interfere and stop that rally, and the police have to intervene to maintain peace and order
then the police should arrest and those people should be prosecuted.

it is better to hear what people say, then you know what type of people they are.

There are a number if things in this video:

But it is the only the far right that protest.

Where are the liberals?

if that sort of thing is allowed without thousands of leftists protesting and forming a counter demonstration, something seems wrong.

AT at 10.36 has the correct answer. Free speech doesn't include opposing fascism for some on here though obviously.

We need to be careful banding words around.

Fascists are against democracy. In other words they oppose the will of the people.

Ma Clinton rejected the result last November as did countless of her supporters. Blair etc etc rejected the Brexit vote. To most Muslims democracy is an anathema.

The Cambridge dictionary says a bigot is : a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who does not like other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life.

So that's people on all sides of political and social debate then.

To suggest the so called far right have a monopoly on bigotry and fascism is rather inaccurate.Grin

I don't think fascists are against democracy, democracy is believing in the same basic fundamental principles and ideals, not different ones.
By:
lfc1971
When: 20 Aug 17 15:42
inevitably democracy is dependent on people being the same not different.

that is why religion and customs and political beliefs and social norms are so important, they have to be pretty much the same otherwise you cannot have democracy.

can you have a successful society that is multi cultural and with differing religious beliefs?
it`s never been done before and is likely to be impossible.

Fascism is a form of government which is a type of one-party dictatorship. Fascists are against democracy. They work for a totalitarian one-party state. ... Such a state is led by a strong leader—such as a dictator and a martial government..

- decent definition from the interweb.

Is the unelected EU a type of fascism?

that`s been the sort of government every successful country has had throughout history.

the party merely represents the people, what the people believe how they want to live.
you can only know that if people believe in the same few basic things.
