All bar one is outstanding. Not cheap, but worth every penny imo. Probably the nicest meal I have ever had.

Good bit of tucker at this gaff :
.
http://www.lechampignonsauvage.co.uk/restaurant-intro.html

Situated within the historic spa town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, Le Champignon Sauvage is the perfect place to relax whilst visiting the Cotswolds.

David Everitt-Matthias and his wife Helen have been running the restaurant since 1987. In that time they have been quietly amassing a range of accolades including…

Two stars - Michelin Red Guide.
Two stars - Harden’s Guide.
4 AA rosettes.
Good Food Guide 8/10 rating, 2014 Chef of the Year.
Catey Chef of the Year.
Decanter Restaurant of the Year.
10/10 Marina O’Loughlin, ‘ The Guardian’.
18/20 Matthew Fort, ‘The Guardian’.
On entering Le Champignon Sauvage, guests will immediately notice an intimate feeling with a refreshing lack of pretension. The restaurant is warmly decorated with a display of bold modern works of art, generous table sizes and comfortable chairs. Helen’s graciousness, blend of informal conversation and professional discretion, creates a happy atmosphere with unobtrusive seamless service. Combined with David’s culinary confidence and imagination this will give you a most pleasurable experience.

David's many awards reflect the esteem in which he is held as a chef. Recognised as one of Britain's leading craftsmen, he is always in the kitchen and has never missed a service. He is also known for his tireless experimentation with anything from the most humble to the most expensive ingredients, and an “ability for making dishes taste more of themselves than the original ingredient”.

His food is a cross between the ‘terroir’ and modern French with very original touches. The menu changes seasonally with great care taken to source the finest local ingredients.

There is also a series of cookery books, demonstrating David’s cooking style and philosophy, enabling both the home and professional cook to recreate the dishes of Le Champignon Sauvage.

L'Artisan : (Tripadvisor review, and reply)

Reviewed 2 weeks ago via mobile by : jennypM9830US

I'm sorry, wanted to love you but...
We really wanted to like your place, maybe it's because we live in London so used to more up to date cooking, I'm sorry.

We thought the presentation was outdated. Also we found out strange that cumin should be such a dominant flavour in your food for a French restaurant. The fish was nice. The fillet steak was fine but my husband commented that it was just like he would get at home if I cooked it (we like to eat t something we could not copy as well at home when we come to a restaurant).

The service was so lovely I'm sorry we didn't feel comfortable expressing our disappointment to a member of staff but we also think it wouldn't make a difference. Clearly from other reviews everyone else thinks you're great, so all the best, but for our family who go out in London weekly we found your food to be outdated.

Once our total reviews on the Tripadvisor went into the six hundreds and sixties I had a thought that it would be weird that the 666th would be a bad one from the Devil him(her)self… OMG ! Am I becoming a soothsayer ??? Laugh
However…

Your Highness

It should have been an honour to welcome you at l’Artisan for the effort you made to come from your crested high grounds down to our popular and deprived rough Cheltenham but unfortunately your conceited attitude in missing so many points has spoilt our deep pleasure.
Our restaurant is called l’Artisan for the purpose of being genuinely a traditional French restaurant. An “up to date” modern place might have been probably named the “Snob” or the “Pretentious” …

My menus and my cooking are deliberately orientated on the original way of cooking authentic recipes from different regions of France, you did not get this and we never pretend to be anything else.

Your husband should be thrilled to be able to enjoy eating beef fillet at home cooked by his own skilled chef; it is not everyone who can afford this. And by the way a beef fillet is a beef fillet as far as it is cooked to your taste, only the sauce really makes the difference. If he likes eating something you would certainly not cook at home he could have chosen the trio of lamb or the confit duck… ???

About your issue with some presence of cumin, I believe that you might need to get your taste bud checked as I usually don’t use cumin in my cooking, only my sous chef has put a pinch of it in the flavoured butter served with the bread.

I noticed you are often referring in your “disappointed” reviews that you live in London. It might be wise for you to stay there!
We all know how amazing is London and this is why we all love this fabulous city ! but there is a whole natural world around which seems to you to be still living in the middle age!

When you write “you didn’t feel comfortable expressing your disappointment to the staff “….. It would have certainly made more difference to communicate and maybe cheers and chat together around a French digestive to try to understand each other than to just write a mean review.

Do not worry we have many regulars who loves us and if you don’t want to, we have no reason to love each other.

I have been to L'Atisan a few times now during the chelt festival.

Its a nice restaurant, however I do feel its the same menu all the time. We stopped going to Montys for this reason, as every year was same menu and got boring.

The sides never change, some pea and carrot mouse that i really don't like, and peas in a little basket thing.

Petit Coco is nice.

East India café is good,(7 course tasting menu) however a tad disappointing last festival, the year before was great. Prices shot up and quality not as good. That may be down to trying to cream extra during the festival week I'm not sure.
