(indian)Tonic water. Buy it in any supermarket or off licence.
I used to favour sugar free ad lime flavoured, cos its horrible.
It contains quinine, which is the best cure for cramps and which the doc would give you in tablet form.

You don't need gallons of it. Just the odd glass.

Wheat is cramping you muscles, it causes inflammation, don't eat carby foods, esp bread.
Stop consuming so much weight and it will go, I used to suffer from this badly particularly around the shoulders area and my thighs, terrible pain, went away when I changed diet, still occasionally consume refined wheaty foods but nowhere near as much.

I'm not a sports nutritionist's but that's just my experience.

...bit drastic.

Think I will stick with the tonic water.

Drinking alcohol is the culprit in many cases. Alcohol dehydrates you and depletes your electrolytes preventing your muscles from functioning correctly (it says here.)

Yet telling someone to stop drinking isn't going to work. So they should take calcium and magnesium before they retire.
If that doesn't do the trick, take potassium as well.

On the odd occasions that I drink these days, I down plenty of water before I go to bed, that works for me as well.

The doctor prescribed quinine

If you get cramps during exercise, you can get supplements containing the minerals above which are intended specifically to replace depleted electrolytes.

A banana contains about a tenth of your daily potassium needs.
Which is far more potassium than you'd get in a tablet.
