On Tuesday my Brother in law who is suffering from Leukemia staggered out of hospital in London, hailed a cab and struggled in(his ankle/legs were playing up).He got chatting with the cabbie who was from Albania but has lived here for 15 years.

He asked what my Bruv in law had and he told him. When they arrived at Fenchurch st the cabbie said there was no need to pay him(meter said £14).Rekindles ones faith in human kindness i thought.

Great Ormond Street, I told the cabbie. Right, he said, and made double-quick time across London and drove off, waving away payment.

I felt guilty as I crossed the road to the Gamblers Book Shop, opposite the children's hospital.

New York,1981. Arrived at my hotel, paid the cabbie and went to check in. Realised I had left my wallet in the cab but he had gone. Explained to the check in clerk that a colleague would be arriving later and he would settle for me then got on the phone to cancel my cards and report the loss to the police.
An hour later, got a call from the cabbie to say that a passenger had found my wallet and handed it to him. He saw the airline ticket and realised it belonged to the Brit he had dropped off earlier. He was over the other side of town but would call by later.
He was as good as his word and handed me the wallet still containing hundreds of dollars untouched.
He wouldn't accept anything but I insisted he took 50 dollars for his trouble and honesty.
Restored my faith in human nature.
