Evgeny...one of my favourite ever Athletics moments was Lewis-Francis beating Maurice Green to the line for the 4x1 relay Olympic Gold in 2004! happy that 'we' won, but just bemused by the time thing.

More That GB relay time was not the 'third fastest in history'. It was 14th. No idea where this 'third fastest all time' is coming from La Rambler @La_Rambler 11m11 minutes ago More Can @BBCSport and @BBCNews stop claiming that GB ran 3rd fastest 4x100m relay of all time. Jamaica/USA have gone quicker multiple times. 0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes Reply Retweet Like Direct message |

I don't think it was a mistake, Fred - I'm sure Akabusi did win that final leg.

you lads had me sweating. apparently the 4x100m appeal will be thrown out cos the GB girl stepped out of the lane BEFORE the changeover and she didn't impede the German runner. PHEW

Bizarre claim by the BBC on the relay time. On replaying I think Colin Jackson (who made it first) means the 3rd fastest country ever "only US and Jamaica have gone quicker". Not quite the same is it? That said it was an epic effort to win that!

How many of those teams were legal?
Been a lot of relay medals revoked after one of the team subsequently failed a test. Asafa Powell for one. |

Walking race- nonsense isn't it ?

I discovered today it used to be a big betting spectacle. (wiki)...
"During the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, pedestrianism, like running or horse racing (equestrianism) was a popular spectator sport in the British Isles. Pedestrianism became a fixture at fairs – much like horse racing – developing from wagers on footraces, rambling, and 17th century footman wagering. Sources from the late 17th and early 18th century in England describe aristocrats pitting their carriage footmen, constrained to walk by the speed of their masters' carriages, against one another. The first notable exponent of this long distance walking is generally considered to be Foster Powell (1734–93) who in 1773 walked 400 miles from London to York and back, and in 1788 walked 100 miles in 21 hours 35 minutes. By the end of the 18th century, and especially with the growth of the popular press, feats of foot travel over great distances (similar to a modern Ultramarathon) gained attention, and were labelled "pedestrianism"." |

Brendan Foster's last commentary tonight isn't it ?
He was part of what I still believe is the greatest ever athletics race , well it hooked me on this sport. Filbert Bayi beating John Walker , Ben Jipcho , Rod Dixon , Brendan Foster and others to win the 1500 metres at the Christchurch Commonwealth games in 1974 in a world record time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvKX22TOCCA |
