Midlanders will say they are from the midlands, but ask anyone in London where Nottingham or Bitmingham is, they will all say "it's up north". Even if you point out that it is indeed in the midlands, to them anywhere north or Watford gap is up north, which is fair enough as it is .

it's where the accents change - which is somewhere around Towecester /Northampton/Peterborough/Worcester/Shrewsbury/Spalding  - they start to take on a familiar northern way of speech - vowel shifts etc

Anyone that pronounces words like Past, Last, Mask, Chance, Dance without the -r that is not there, is a northerner imo.

For some reason Coach I've never been to York but it is certainly on my "to do" list.
I used to spend a few weekends in Scotland which I used to enjoy a lot and have been to Perth races which is a lovely track and Carlisle as well on the border. You have to actually go to Carlisle to understand quite how steep the uphill run in is, it's stiffer than Towcester which is saying something. It's not a place that I would have ever gone to had it not been for the racecourse though as the place itself is rather grim to put it mildly.

I was in Scunthorpe a few weeks ago and most of the northern accents were from Eastern Europe. They did however have the highest number of gold/pawn shops I have encountered anywhere.

....  did you own  a horse Slippers ?

York is a lovely old place,   although  my memory  of the place isn't 100 % owing to a few bottles of Old Peculiar.

Harrogate and Chester are the two i haven't been two up north which i need to visit .

Whitby is also  a place i like - Carlisle  is a bit rough and ready  - a bit like my town lol    ... haven't been to the course though  Happy

Loved it at york races..blinding...cooperman the eastern europeans have completely taken over east anglia so scunny being rumania on sea doesnt suprise me..fact is they are taking up very much of the affordable housing..hence my search..probably end up selling big issues on the island of uist

My son and his wife lives in York centre - nice apartment near the Minster. Great shopping and eating out. Only problem Friday and Saturday nights the place is inundated with stag and hen parties mostly the great unwashed from the North East. The noise goes on until the early hours so they get very little sleep. They are now planning to move to the outskirts.

When I was young I hated Northerners, but loved going oop North for football, and I hated the people, they all talked funny and wore shocking clothes, as you get older you mellow, met loads of decent Northern types on holiday, met up many times for drinks etc and shown some beautiful villages, been to loads of the racetracks and stayed in some lovely areas, I am lucky, I live in a lovely area now, ( Petts Wood ) you wouldn't get me to move back for anything
