A source of much anti-Trump comedic output lately, chlorine washed chicken. They can't mention chlorine enough on HIGNFY et al. Did they use chlorine before Trump, or did he introduce the practice?
Report cooperman July 25, 2017 12:50 PM BST
They have different chickens in the good old USA, last time I visited I had chicken fingers. Shocked
Report Foinavon July 25, 2017 12:56 PM BST
As zorro says, there are more important things to worry about.

Mothers have been sterilising baby feeding bottles with chlorinated water since before I was born.
Report saddo July 25, 2017 1:02 PM BST
I agree, not really important, but the comedians would have you think it was. Not as nice as that yellow corn fed stuff that they probably eat, but not unhealthy. Are they so short of material these days?
Report Foinavon July 25, 2017 1:08 PM BST
The media have had it in for Trump ever since he became an election candidate, they are still using every trick in the book to paint him in a bad light. Just part of the plan.
Report cooperman July 25, 2017 1:11 PM BST
Yeah buddy, the latest trick to paint him in a bad light is publishing the things he says and does. What next, publishing his tax returns?

Is it really wise to import Chickens from a country 3,500 miles away ?,I'm quite happy eating the Chickens I get now
for 3-4 quid...
Report saddo July 25, 2017 1:34 PM BST
Probably no wiser than shipping lamb from New Zealand, I don't think that is the point of the 'jokes' though.
Report Foinavon July 25, 2017 1:41 PM BST
I've no problem with them reporting what he says and does, Cooperman, there's more to it than that.

The EU's very own European Food Standards Authority has approved chlorine-washed chicken. No problems whatsoever on health grounds.

The only reason the EU has banned it is to keep the price up to protect French farmers.

A protectionist market works both ways but if you leave it the benefits you had within it
quickly unravel sometimes you don't know what you got till it's gone as the song says.

We can look forwards to a KFBC Kentucky fried bleached chicken..
Report saddo July 25, 2017 3:24 PM BST
We all get fed Halal KFC without being asked, that's not even about protectionism, it's about discriminating towards one minority section of society. They want it, we all get it.
Report Foinavon July 25, 2017 3:32 PM BST
I would be more concerned about eating the oil soaked batter in which KFC cook their chicken than in eating chlorine washed chicken. We need to get antibiotics out of the food chain rather than worry about this.
Saddo has a good point regarding animal cruelty although it's not the whole issue surrounding poultry farming.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves July 25, 2017 3:52 PM BST
This is not an issue of consumer protection: the EU simply ignores its own advice on that subject. It's a matter of protectionism: something entirely different.

The EU's Health Protection Authority states that chlorine-washed chicken is safe.

But the EU still goes ahead and bans chlorine-washed chicken, because it is 20% cheaper.

There is no protection of consumers involved, because there's no hazard from which to protect them.

The sole issue is protection of French farmers' wealth.

That's not entirely true tbf. The vast majority of KFC stores sell non Halal chicken. If they sell Halal in any store then they say so and have a non Halal store within 7 miles. They have Halal stores where there is a demand for it which is a  good business choice,
although the vast majority are non Halal.

Doesn't sound quite as good a story though does it?
Report saddo July 25, 2017 4:47 PM BST
My bad, do you have the figures on meat used in school lunches james?
Report tictacman1 July 25, 2017 4:52 PM BST
KFC UK and Ireland offer halal foods in 92 restaurants in areas where there is a large demand.
Report jamesdean July 25, 2017 5:01 PM BST
I don't saddo.

KFC have over 800 stores in UK last time checked, probably 1000 now as they seem to be throwing them up everywhere.
There's around 100 stores that sell Halal, 1/10. They'd be silly to lose the mussies custom by not offering Halal in certain places.
Report jamesdean July 25, 2017 5:03 PM BST
Sorry tictac, 92 stores, so probably under 1/10 that are Halal.
Report blackbarn July 25, 2017 5:24 PM BST
Why do people care about Halal chicken?  I'd rather have mine done as is normal for homebred chickens, by having its throat cut or neck pulled. If you prefer yours gassed or electrified in a powered water bath then that's up to you.
Report DStyle July 25, 2017 5:58 PM BST
Two things

The KFC Halal thing.

For what must be the 5th time I've posted on here: Well over 90% of Halal chicken slaughter is done on pre-stunned animals. All of KFC's is. The difference? It's a muslim who kills the stunned bird. Pretty sure the prayer is on a loop over a tannoy. If that bothers you, you're mental.

As for chlorine spraying.

I can promise you that regardless of the life an animal has lived, practically all poultry is absolutely covered in faecal bacteria.

If you're careful with your prep and know how to avoid cross-contamination, you'll never get ill (unless you like licking raw chicken skin).

Avoiding chlorine spraying because you think it encourages better food safety is laughable.

The single thing most important thing is knowing how to handle raw meat.
