As was said of Churchill: he was often wrong but he was right the one time it really mattered.
Churchill is also our only Prime Minister -- and possibly the only world leader ever, though I've only spent two minutes thinking about it so there could be others -- to have been shot at on four continents: Europe in the trenches of WW1; Asia in Afghanistan; Africa in the Boer War and Sudan; the Americas in the Cuban war of independence. |

Did want was needed to be done to win including sinking the French fleet. Certainly wasn't like the politicians of today more worried about people's human right and not wanting to offend. On that matter I see that the SAS is being looked into for being a bit rough in Afghanistan I'm sure ISIS also hold reviews "Should we of beheaded that fella or would a Chinese burn of been enough" im fed up with our troops being held to account when those that they are fighting do not play by any set of fair rules, they haven't even got the b@lls to wear a uniform so that they can melt into the general population ![]() |

Stroll on, some of them think more of Lenny Henry than they do of our greatest leader. No wonder the country has gone to the dogs. |

If it wasn't for the Americans would Britain have won the war? If it wasn't for Britain, would the Americans have won the war, or even entered it? Number of military casualties in World War 2 Britain, USA and France combined = 900,000 USSR = 12,000,000 Who won the war? |

@FredRescue -- no-one disputes the terrible suffering of the Soviet people. The Eastern (Russian) front saw the same sort of industrial scale slaughter as the First World War trenches. Whether the butcher's bill made much difference is another question.
If Britain had fallen or had surrendered in 1940, the Germans would have had a free run at Russia, without us tying up German resources or arming the Soviets via the Arctic convoys. Eventually either Germany or the Soviet Union would have won. There would have been no way in for America. The whole of Europe would have been under a Nazi dictatorship or a Communist dictatorship. |

@FredRescue -- Britain allowed the Americans (and the Russians if you like) to save Europe and perhaps the world.
Britain did not win the war but we were necessary for the war to be won. |
