My brother in law who happens to be 57 collects autographs..used to be lower league footballers but now its jockeys ffs.Imagine going up to a jockey(who looks about 12) and asking for his autograph.What a sad fck.

The kids of today dont collect autographs, just it' all about selfies now.

When I was a kid Slade (pop group) were making a film near my school asked Noddy Holder for his autograph he give it no problem ..I then asked Dave Hill he told me to f...k off ..me and my mates couldn't stop laughing

Similar story Scamp. England were training at Sudbury Town football club before a game at Wembley which is not far away. At the end of the training session I like all the other kids ran on to get autographs. Went up to Geoff Hurst only to hear him say "P1ss off you little b@rstards"  Gorden Banks on the other hand stayed on the pitch signing all the kids autograph books. A true gentleman ! As for Geoff Hurst fu ck him, Natinal hero is ain't no hero of mine   on the bright side it's good to know the experience hasn't left me bitter and twisted

Rather a curious pastime for a grown man, perhaps, but often a very lucrative one.  The rare examples below (apologies the image is upside down) were recently found languishing in the dark recesses of a warehouse in Mainz, Germany.  Being an avid enthusiast, I realised immediately that they were the fabled Raschigs, arguably the most desirable sets for knowledgeable players and collectors alike.  The entire consignment was quickly purchased for an absolute bargain of €400. 

I'll keep one set for my personal collection and sell the remainder in America for $8,000 to $10,000 (probably nearer the higher figure).  Google will confirm this bullish estimate if anyone cares to investigate further.

I can assure you it's true, sir.  Not only are these exceptionally rare and desirable, they're also in a pristine, unused condition, which is almost unprecedented.

They will sell in the region of $500 per set without doubt. :)

It's like any collectors' market really, sir, the rarest items will always demand a premium price.  Look at certain stamps, for example, a tiny square of paper valued at half a million!

It depends who has signed the merchandise, some American presidents' signatures can fetch a fortune.

when I was 14 a mate & myself started collecting matchboxes & book matches, after a couple of years I gave up & gave my collection to my friend, that was in 1977 & 40 years later he's still collecting, his collection is in excess of 300,000

300000 matchboxes. FFS, that's an obsession! Some mate you are!

He must have thousands of duplicates, nobody could possibly remember if that many were all different. I'd be amazed if he's married BTW.

Lopking on the bright side I suppose it's a good job he chose matchboxes and not pillar boxes!

Sadly his wife died two years back, has just moved in with someone else, he may spend a couple of days  a week on it I know it seems all consuming but its not taken over his life surprisingly, he sits in a room sorting them out listening to  his music not your typical geek,  he has  put most  into around 500 plus albums, some of it is actually  a really interesting collection, he has loads of sport I  asked him recently have you got any racecourses & he pulled out an album of courses & bookies going back to the 19th century.
He obviously get duplicates but sells them at Auctions, there are conventions in the States twice a year he makes up auction lots & gets decent money for some.

Hey, I've just had a great idea! You should suggest he stops collecting matchboxes and starts collecting thimbles instead, he'll be able to collect 300000 before he runs out of places to put them!

That's fine no worries, he met someone else  a year later, sold his house & moved in with her !
He goes to the states stays with a bloke in Philly, meets up at the convention in whatever city its in & around six of them go hitting the bars every night.

I asked if he was married BTW because I know for an absolute fact that my wife would have thrown any matchbox/pool ball/whatever collection of mine away as soon as it outgrew a small drawer!

Possibly in the  low hundreds for something old & rare, he showed me an original Bryant & May matchbox from around 1860 I think, with all the matches still there, I was  holding a box of matches over 150 years old & my thought was someone  born best part of 200 years ago had this in her hands & now I'm holding it.

Hundreds for a matchbox, thousands for pool balls! Damn, I'm in the wrong game.

This will make you laugh, I collected for two years & in 76 went to Gran Canaria for a holiday, so I went collecting for myself & my friend, it was a buying frenzy, I found hundreds of boxes, I always got shot of the matches back then & I put hundreds of boxes worth of matches in my hotel emptying the boxes into  draws in the room, came back one day & my dad had to explain to the hotel staff what the fack thousands of matches were doing in the sock draws

Did I read that right? There is a matchbox convention where blokes travel thousands of miles to go and meet other blokes to talk about matchboxes?

That's rare most really old ones may be worth a score but this was basically  almost an original from the B & M factory's early days
