Black pubs

To me that maybe a refection on you. I'm 50 years old, born in Brixton and have had several beers in pretty much every pub in South London in my time and have got untold amounts of mates from the West Indies. Never once have I had grief anywhere in my entire life from anyone regardless of race, colour nor creed. I know Peckham very well, I live not that far away in Dulwich Village. I've got friends there, never once have I had a problem with anyone.

No we only had 2 or 3 pints at that stage so were not even merry let alone drunk.

Quite a few "black" pubs in the 80s, Chapeltown- Leeds, Manningham- Bradford. The only white people in there went to listen to reggae and buy weed. Quite harmonious for years til crack cocaine appeared and then the mood changed over a shortish time.

Slippy - my dad took me to a pub in Brixton, about 1976 i reckon.

One bar was frequented by blacks only, the other bar by whites only. If a black man went into the white bar, he was served alright, but at 3 times the cost of the black bar.

So if a white bloke went in the black bar could he get a pint for 1/3 the cost of the white bar?

Back in the day I think it was more dangerous for a Blackman to walk into a white pub than the other way round, I'm talking 70s and 80s.

Been drinking in pubs for 50 years and never come across a totally racist one. Been in many which were predominantly white and blacks have been there and vice versa but never seen any trouble down to that. Footy pubs a completely different experience. Wrong colours, wrong accent, wrong clothes, order a pint the wrong way, look at somebody the wrong and all hell can break loose.

It is a good neighbourhood moises,plenty of good pubs and restaurants.

Great place for a drink. Most people are friendly whatever walk of life they inhabit. Mrs 'Death doesn't like to frequent the pubs in the Northern half of Portobello Road becuase she thinks they are too chavvy but I am from Gillingham so they are what I am used to. Just can't be doing with Beach Blanket Babylon and Cocktails!

The only problem I have in W10 is in some of the so called " posher " pubs I find some people have no class and think they should get served before anyone else who has been waiting since before they came in. It really annoys me. I mean I usually save my vitriol for for racists but it does get my goat when people push in. I hold my tongue when with the missus but I have let one or two know what I think. I don't like to punch people, I am not very good at it either, however, if you come from Gillingham you do have to at least pretend you are a viscious thug or people take liberties. I can do that quite well until the fist's start flying and although I float like a butterfly I also punch like one or as my mates say like a girl, well maybe not as hard as a Chatham girl!

I will log your advice and will attempt to do a few in the area.

I drink at the Walmer Castle in Ledbury Road and the Prince Bonarparte in Chepstow Road.

Food is good almost everywhere!

Personally i think the racism card is used too much these days which just dilutes the real genuine racism issues but the 70s were shocking in hindsight.

Wouldn't want to go in some of the pubs where i live if you were of different colour in one of the quietest and apparently politest towns in the country,many pubs are full of EDF and EBF scum there are 100s of them even in the quaint town where i live...

In the show Love Thy Neighbour, it was the white bloke who came out worst.

Well then iwar in the  70s was very cleverly edited to show just the shocking bit and cue the shocked celeb going oh my god.

It was still racism as we know it today but it was from a different time where people werent as easily offended.

A very conservative town Shrewsbury,great place to live but still full of load of idiots can't imagine how many of these
scum bags are in the bigger towns and citys must be 10s of thousands,i know alot of them in their 50s and 60s think they own the town and drag all the youngsters into it as well.

The EBF are quite reknowned and are members of the EDF,there's even been a documentary on tv naming them i've known most of them for 25 years,still dong the same things they were doing 30 years ago.I used to drink in these pubs when i was younger so i could probably name 200 of themand they were and probably still are the main siurce odf drug dealing.

I am going to give this a miss. Unfortunately I am not going to be able to watch the game so despite my view that Inida will win convincingly also have a nagging feeling it might be Pakistan's " turn ". Slippy , I know you have a similar heritage to myself. But in my Dad's day the Blacks drank in the Irish pubs, the only place they could get a decent pint of Guinness. My Dad had loads of West Indian friends, back in the days from Boarding Houses having signs saying " No Blacks, No Irish No Dogs." In Leicester there used to be a big bond between the Irish and the West Indians, lived in the same areas went to the same pubs. I am talking late 60's and the 70's.

at least 2 in Deptford... the osborne arms... the centurion...

Catford/Lewisham .... the plough and harrow.... blythe hill tavern... the dartmouth ... the george...,the anchor

Sydenham .... the man of kent

Forest Hill .... the st germains

there were loads more in peckham...camberwell.. brixton ... new x   ... basically most black/white areas..... i did like a drink back then

When I lived in Nunhead in the early 90's  me and a mate regularly used those black pubs in Peckham because they always served late into the night. Never had any problems in their whatsoever despite being the only pissed white faces in the pub. I remember the  Breakspears Arms in Brockly used to have a white half and black half like a lot of the south London pubs but never any hassle if you went in the wrong half.

You won't see any black people,asian or any other ethnicity in s'bury the simple fact is you won't see them in any pubs in the whole town just not worth the hassle...

Back in the 90s I was mates with a guy from s'bury who said he never drank in the pubs back home as at the time they were full of blokes who wanted to kick off who called themselves The Border Defence League. If there were no Welsh to scrap with then they would look to have a rumble with Telford BDL members instead.  He was a shrew born and bred but was chased out of a pub for being a sheeps#gger because he and his mates were watching rugby in the pub! The game wasn't even union it was GB v Aus circa 94/95 Rugby League, he said it was because Jonathan Davies was playing for GB
