A huge fire has engulfed a tower block in Latimer Road, west London, with eyewitnesses claiming people are trapped in their homes.
The fire at Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate was reported at 01:16 BST and about 200 firefighters are tackling the blaze.
The Met Police said people were being treated for "a range of injuries".
The BBC's Andy Moore said the whole tower block was alight and there are fears the building might collapse.
London Fire Brigade sent 40 fire engines to the tower.
Eyewitnesses said they could see lights - thought to be torches - flashing at the top of the block of flats, which people say is "close to burning through".
At about 04:00 police said: "Residents continue to be evacuated from the tower block."

Our correspondent said: "We've seen debris falling from the building, we've heard explosions, we've heard the sound of glass breaking.
"The police keep pushing back their cordons, pushing back members of the public for fear the building might collapse."
He said the building was "burning out of control", from the tenth floor onwards.
'Burned away'
George Clarke, the presenter of Channel 4 TV programme Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live: "I'm getting covered in ash, that's how bad it is.
"I'm 100 metres away and I'm absolutely covered in ash.
"It's so heartbreaking, I've seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can't get out."

Tim Downey, another eyewitness, told the BBC part of the building was "completely burned away".
"It has burned through to its very core," he said.
"It looks very bad, very very bad. I've never seen anything like this. It's just such a big fire.
"The whole building is just crumbling. It's just billowing black smoke."

People keep their windows open in the summer so the fire spreads upwards quickly. The block I live in now has U.P.V.C windows
but before had wooden frames that could exacerbate the problem.Fire is always the fear in blocks like these built in the 60's.

I suspect foul play here. Why would it burn like that?

The local council's in the dock here.
From the decision to clad the outside of the building with flammable insulating material. If that cladding is what I believe it to be.
To the advice to tenants to stay in their flats in case of a fire and wait for the fire services to get to them.

Also the fire alarms appear to have failed.

Truly shocking! I am up that way alot. Thank God they have not been building tower blocks there like in East London but most of the big stuff is ex council. It really was quite frightening and sad. Sometimes we need to stop bitching and consider how lucky we are!

Similar Blocks to mine have recently been clad a stones from me, so far our blocks are untouched
if the cladding is to blame it could prove an expensive mistake.

Sadly Crippen I have to agree with you but I dont think it is the time to get into that. I fear many more than 3 or 4 bodies will be found.

TBF the arguments about this tradegy will have far reaching consequences and will reach the Houses of Parliament. There have been calls from the Fire Committee to have sprinkler systems put in to a variety of tall buildings, hospitals and schools. There is a cost dynamic to this too and I should not be getting involved in politics!

I can't believe that the advice was to stay inside put a towel under the door and wait for rescue!

They had a woman from the council on the radio defending that advice Whisperingdeath.
The silly woman said they had a few fires recently where the advice to stay in their homes and wait for the fire crews had worked out.

I took that as an attempt to justify the advice. Which I took as unbelievably complacent.

Yet these people stay in their jobs!

Sadly, it is likely that the warning signs put up inside the block, were heeded by lots of  families.

Fire safety in blocks of flats is highly dependent upon fire resistant construction. When considering the construction of individual houses, the way they are constructed with party wall separation is a large part of ensuring that fire does not pass from one dwelling to the next. In flats, the concept is similar but is achieved through effective compartmentation of the individual flats within a block, and the protection of common areas and corridors to help ensure escape.

The inclusion of fire resistant compartmentation should help to ensure that fire is contained in its area of origin and does not endanger those flats nearby. This is the basis of the ‘Stay put’ policy which means that any persons in the flat of fire origin will need to evacuate, but that their neighbours should not need to evacuate and will remain safe.

It is unfortunate that anger is rising here before grief has had it's chance and I have to admit to feeling a lot of anger and I don't even live in a tower block. I see a lot of high rise going up in Stratford and was complaining of the issues of high density living for the people who live there. I did not even consider the chance of fire yesterday afternoon.

Heads should not roll, people should be jailed but like someone said to me recently the Airline Industry has a culture of full revelation to try and prevent a repeat. The NHS has one of secrecy and concealment and thousands of people die as a result. I would expect a whitewash and cover up from this inquiry. Blame heaped on the little guys as usual and no one holding a position of responsibilty will get any aportioned blame!

I noticed some houses having cladding added to the outsides to insulate.

It looked like a form of grey coloured polystyrene to me.

We all know how inflammable polystyrene is. Why use stuff that isn't highly fire resistant on the outside of buildings?

FWIW, my neighbour says that they use flammable insulation material and render over it.
