Michael Sheen was absolutely brilliant in his portrayal of Brian Clough in that film which I really enjoyed. He was also excellent playing David frost in Frost/Nixon as well.

A bit of artistic licence. By all accounts there was no way Clough was a boozer at that time. He couldn't have achieved what he did on the training ground, if he had been. Didn't even smoke. The red nose came a lot later.

The Bremner character looked unnervingly accurate though.

Agreed Annie.
As screaming has indicated I don't think it was a totally accurate portrayal of Clough.

BTW I only remember Bremner for the miss from about 2 feet in the Brazil match at the 74 WC in Germany.
We were the only unbeaten team that year with a victory over Zaire and draws with Brazil and Yugoslavia.

It wasn't a totally accurate portrayal of many.

Dave Mackay (see plate 3, above, explaining the law on tackling from behind to Billy Bremner) won an apology and libel damages from the film makers. For God knows what reason they decided to portray him as the man who broke the Derby County players' revolt - the one intended to get Clough reinstated at the Baseball Ground. MacKay wasn't even playing for Derby at the time, having moved on to be player-manager at Swindon. I really don't know why they invented such a horrible lie. Perhaps they thought MacKay was dead and couldn't sue, but I still don't see what it adds to the story.

Similarly Johnny Giles won a legal action against the publishers of the original book, which had wrongly fingered him as the man behind Clough's sacking from Leeds.

It's fair to say that overall the film makers were wise to wait until most of the characters in the story were dead before releasing it, or they'd be living in cardboard boxes under the flyover now.
