Rudyard Kipling wrote exceedingly bad poetry.

“if ifs and ands were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers' hands”.

Tinkers must have had it easy in their day, how difficult  can it be to mend a pot or a pan? I think the only thing that can go wrong with a pot or a pan is the handle can come off, but they're easy to screw back on again. Easy money.

I believe they were actually skilled metal workers (tinsmiths) who repaired household items, utensils etc, including repairing holes in pots and pans when those items were not cheap and therefore worth repairing, unlike our disposable society of today.

We used to have them come the farm and they'd sharpen all the tools and knives. I think the Ma's tongue used to get a quick sharpen as well..
