The EU themselves did a languages report in 2012.  It's available online.  They found that 38% of EU citizens could speak English as a 2nd language whilst just 12% could manage in French.  As someone with an interest in languages I have found it irritating that foreigners tend to have a very good or excellent command of English.  I've had to pretend I'm Hungarian or similar in order to stop them replying in English.  Like it or not, English is (well known as) a lingua franca and Juncker came across as childish.

English is the global language of business, science, diplomacy, the media/entertainment - you name it. No way of getting away from that. Juncker even announced it in English before switching. That meme is dominant and unlikely to fail. When we're gone from the EU it will still be the main language.  Nice.

Is it not ironic then that this years winning song was sung in Portuguese ...

Just sayin'... Plain

It'll be forgotten in, at a guess 5 days maybe..

I suspect the illuminati wish to shaft Portugal(and have taken positions accordingly) - having them host Eurovision will surely sink the economy.

Often wondered about this when ' no so rich ' countries win the Eurovision contest. Is it a poisoned chalice ?
Does the country receive some kind of grant to subsidise the cost of hosting such an event. ?
I can't see big revenues being generated within the country as a result of them wining !
Report lfc1971 May 14, 2017 7:49 AM BST
does anyone know why it costs anything to host the Eurovision?

Without English there would be very few songs, and almost no poetry.
That's all you need to know.
Report moisok May 14, 2017 3:39 PM BST
clearly we are doomed

Utter scum. Music juries accounting for half the votes is a vile system when a 100% public voting system is available. This is as condescending as the Remain campaign implying that experts knew what was best.
Disgusted too by the BBC, who think government should decide how we are entertained, deciding to broadcast this patronising garbage which excluded a Russian contestant because she wasn't eligible for a visa to Ukraine.
Report fife May 14, 2017 5:42 PM BST
that right bongo get a dig in about the BBC you sad ****.
