Used to look forward to the Jersey Royals but as, someone said, they have been nothing special for years now!
I did feel that the last couple of years they were an improvement, but this year I just paid a premium price for some washed baby ones, and any other baby potatoes would be just the same! |

Everybody used to look forward to Jersey pots, they had a fabulous taste. Housewives could be regularly heard asking the shop-keeper "when are the Jerseys out". You had to be quick, they soon sold out and the season seemed fairly short. When the Jersys ran out you had the Lincolnshire new pots to look forward to, which were lovely, but not as good as Jerseys.
For over 25 years I've bought just one poundof Jerseys a year, hoping that they'd recovered their glorious taste, but they never have. |

I too am growing my own in 6 bags but I'm embarrassed to say I never took a note of what variety I planted. One is a first early, Charlotte I think. I will plant more first earlies in a couple of weeks for Autumn use.

Right after Jerseys came the Pembrokeshire 'Puffins', they were enjoyed at Buckingham Palace according to the blurb

Always felt Marris Pipers are hugely overrated, they make Ok roast potatoes because they crisp up well but don't have that much flavour and fall apart too easily to be a good boiling spud. For me, Pink Fir Apples if I fancy a waxy salad potato and Sainsbury's Vivaldi potatoes for baking and everything else.

This year I am growing... First Earlies - Lady Christl Second Earlies - Marfona Main Crop - Picasso I like Pink Fir Apple already mentioned. Ratte is very good too (apologies if someone beat me to it) |

Some recent Jersey Royals were almost as good as I remember them. Over the years they must have exported thousands of tons of the soil with them - wonder if that's part of the reason. Do they import soil?

With respect I don't believe that. I got my usual pound and they were as bland as they've been for the last 25 years. It's not the soil, it's the plastic covering.
