Jersey Royal, although they ain't what they used to be, as they've had to stop putting seaweed on the soil during the growing process.
It was the seaweed that gave them their unique and delicious taste. H&S or something like that?. Spent some time working in Ireland a few years ago, everywhere I went the potatoes were delicious, boiled, chipped, roast etc.. they were Dublin Queens variety, unobtainable outside Ireland I believe. |

Didn't mention the EU, Blackbarn.
Apparently they are grown mostly under plastic to start, ensuring an early crop. Farmers use much less seaweed because of the cost and time of the year. They tend to plant earlier, using plastic as prevention against frost... although they don't get much of that on Jersey! |

I don't have any particular favourite and grow different varieties each year.
For new potatoes, freshness is all. This is the problem with shop bought as the special flavour dissipates with time. For waxy salad type, Charlotte is hard to beat and for main-crop the principal criterion for me is that they don't dissolve into slurry during boiling. Can't go wrong with King Edward, Majestic or Desiree. |

I grow my own spuds, and have 1 or 2 small rows (12ft?) of International Kidney. They don't keep well, in or out of the ground,
hence the small amount I plant. They're the same variety as grown on Jersey. Have some Charlottes as well, not much else this year though, was a very wet spring here. |

Golden Wonder of you can get them - all the crisp companies snap them up. they fry quicker than any potato I've seen. half the time. I try and look and see if the potato is yellow. White potatoes are tasteless. Tesco is selling a red potato just know, peel into it - deep yellow. they are £2 a bag - tesco finest. I got them reduced(cheap skate). |

My old dad always used to swear by Arran Pilot.
Wasn't sure if you could still get 'em, but I have just read this: Arran pilot is one of the most popular first early potato varieties amongst amateur gardeners and this has been the situation for 30 years or so. There is no doubt that this variety has a very short shelf life, ten days at the most. But when eaten within a couple of days after they are dug up the flavour is supreme, quite delicious. That is the best way to cultivate this variety so only grow as many as you can eat almost immediately they are harvested. A lot is published about the taste of Jersey Royals but Arran Pilot can on many soils equal or surpass that flavour. |

The best new potato is Ulster Prince,they have that wonderful new potato taste .Not easy to find because they dont keep well at all.

I am a home grown potato expert!
I grow them all the year round. In the greenhouse during the winter months. I put four inches of compost in a bucket and place three chits of sprouting potato on top, then cover with another four inches of compost. Use water dear Henry. When the plants are well through I put another four inches of compost on to stop the potatoes going green. Admittedly this is not rocket science. But then rocket science will not help you to grow potatoes. |

There is a first early variety called Rocket, Dr C.
I grew it once and it did produce tubers remarkably early. The only trouble was that slugs enjoyed them more than I did. |
