Depends what surface your "off road" shortcuts entail Road bike will be fine if its pavement/smoothish cobbles. rugged bridle path forget it I have had halfords Carrera for around 8 years cost £249 ridden 20,000 miles plus never a problem other than replacing tyres/brake pads/chains etc from normal wear and tear which you will get with any bike

Halfords are rubbish. Anyone buying a bike needs to get bike repair knowledge. First time it goes wrong it lays in a corner for five years. Go to a repair guy and you get shafted. I nearly killed myself twice on one - I finally got the message and stopped it. Swim or walk to work? I live on an island.

Why Halfords? Usually staffed by kids who know nothing and care even less. Lots of dodgy offers where bikes are on sale at very high figures so that they can be reduced to the proper price in a "sale". Boardman bikes are good though but don't expect any advice about use or fitting as the staff are there to sell not advise. Go to your local bike shop or shop online at places like Evans, Wiggle, Chain Reaction, Ribble. It all comes down to how much you want to pay as with bike stuff you very much get what you pay for and a cheap bike is not worth riding. Your mention of a 10 speed (5 cogs on the back and a double chainring)does indicate that it's a long time since you rode as 10 speeds are now vintage collectors items.

I bought a bike from Halfords for my grandson, age just four and a half.
The monkeys upstairs had "built it" (that's their statement).
They brought it down to the till and the front mudguard was loose. The brake pads were out of line with the rims, and when I stood it on the rest it fell over!!!!

Nothing wrong with most of the Boardman range. Even after you spent another 50 quid to take it to your local bike shop to be put together properly it would still be decent value

If you decide on "Boardman" it has to be Halfords!
