Donated to some luvvies we know trying to put on a play. That didn't happen. But we did not get our money back either, and now it seems impolite to ask.
But..
What happens to the fortunes pledged to that couple with the child they want to send to a doctor in America?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4276440/Parents-desperate-court-battle-let-baby-son-live.html
Are they giving that money back, as they should, or has it gone on legal fees, or what?
What is the protocol, please?

I guess there's no legal requirement for the receivers of the gifts to hand it back. It's your loss and their gain.
Report lovegod April 25, 2017 2:03 PM BST
So the luvvies putting on the play can just go out and p*ss it up the wall with no comebacks?

Sounds like a place for cheats and scumbags.

Does anyone do any checks on the people asking for donations?

I suspect as crowdfunding becomes more and more popular, the crooks are going to take advantage of it and will be stealing people's money with the pretence/con of it being for a good cause.

If you want to get people to send you money set up a channel on You TUBE.

People will actually send you money if you do videos they like.

There's been numerous scams, there's webpages devoted to showing the scams on gofundme and all the other begging sites.  A site more or less offering free money, probably has more crooks than ebay and gumtree.

Dont know and don't care but moving expenses shouldn't come under the "just giving" banner. Some people have no shame.

Why is it impolite too ask? They asked for donations for a specific reason and haven't come up with the goods? That gives you every right to ask why not.Confused

Think the alternative title for Crowdfunding is the Labour Party Manifesto.

Gin - in the business we call show, your approach may be described as "rather on the nose." They're more friends than business contacts, and we would be termed "angels" perhaps. So, One makes this kind of gesture with eyes open - of far more concern is someone crowd funding a million for questionable medical treatment; and I can't find any news about the family giving that money back.
Report lfc1971 April 26, 2017 12:31 PM BST
Artists as a rule understand nothing about business, or for some reason they pretend not to.
Report lfc1971 April 26, 2017 12:33 PM BST
you must always beware of these great talents, they will say I am a great talent and deserving of your money. That's how they operate.
sooner or later you will have to keep a revolver sitting on your desk to protect you from these great talents.
Report unitedbiscuits April 26, 2017 12:40 PM BST
Yeah, that's true, lfc1971.
Report CLYDEBANK29 April 26, 2017 1:50 PM BST
ub if they are "friends" and tbh even if they are not it's impolite (to put it very mildly) not to either a) give it back or b) offer an explanation why they can't.
Report unitedbiscuits April 26, 2017 2:28 PM BST
Well that's why I asked what the protocol is, Clydebank. If a project does not get off the ground, are the partial funds released to the fundraisers or held in hock or what? There are considerations of delicacy, even more so for people who have pledged money to help a sick kid, and I'm more wondering if those considerations give crowdfunders more licence than they should be allowed.
Report Gin April 26, 2017 3:58 PM BST
ub - You say you made the gesture with eyes open but then seem unsure of the protocol - isn't that contradictory?

As Clydebank says - either way, surely its rude not to at least fill you in on the situation?

From the FAQ at Justgiving

'What happens if I donʼt hit my target?

If you donʼt hit your target youʼll still receive any funds you raised (minus some small fees), so you can still make good things happen.
'

So there you go. Good things will happen Laugh
Report Journeyman April 26, 2017 5:23 PM BST
It shouldn't be the responsibility of artists anyway to organise repaying the money (working out fees etc which could be complicated). Artists are only obliged to be good at art.
And donators shouldn't need to enquire.

The intermediary (crowdfunder) should really deal with all of that, and it should be clear to all what is/will happen.
Needs more regulated and that's probably coming.
Report TheChaser April 26, 2017 5:25 PM BST
what happens if they hit the target twice over as i seen this before they aint handing it back

do they go on holiday longer or holiday and bank the rest

50% at least are probably just scammers

even the real ones want more than they need
Report Journeyman April 26, 2017 5:45 PM BST
Thing is, artists are less likely to be scammers by virtue of being drawn to the arts in the first place.
Generalisation sure, exceptions sure, but largely the case.

Lawyers, accountants etc are driven purely by the acquisition of wealth with no other factors really involved.
Artists are fundamentally not, they are drawn by another calling.

For decades before crowfunding, the 'Professionals' etc in a community would get involved in funding local projects eg filmmaking, theatre etc. Everyone gets something out of it, the artists get backing and the Professionals get dusted by the glamour of a movie or show. It's a good thing!

It's the crowdfunder that needs to step up here and provide a more transparent and effective facility.
Report CLYDEBANK29 April 26, 2017 6:51 PM BST
Lawyers and accountants are prepared to work hard for their money as both require a lot of dedication and very hard work to qualify, that the majority of people are incapable of.  If anything, I'd say they are less likely than average to be criminals.  I think most criminals are not prepared to work as hard as the average person, let alone those people who are prepared to work extra hard.

Generalisations sure, exceptions sure, but largely the case.
Report CLYDEBANK29 April 26, 2017 6:55 PM BST
Self made businessmen, without qualifications are far more likely to be breaking the law than either lawyers or accountants.  It is such a bad analogy journeyman.
Report CLYDEBANK29 April 26, 2017 7:14 PM BST
One way to get an idea is to test how much insurance costs if you put in different professions.  My guess is that lawyers and accountants are right at the bottom, below artists.
Report unitedbiscuits April 26, 2017 10:01 PM BST
Thanks for the comments, I understand it now. So, it doesn't really matter how viable the goal is for crowd funding.

To the question how do artists and authors of sketches and plays and stories get along in life
the answer must be that they are stragglers and workshy and down at heel...
very many of them are  complete rogues and will not think twice about spending other people's money.
Report lfc1971 April 26, 2017 10:36 PM BST

I really have serious misgivings about this initiative:

www.gofundme.com/please-help-to-save-charlies-life

They don't name the Dr in America, they don't give any indication of what the (oral) treatment costs, what will happen to the money if the baby dies, how much is to bespent in legal fees etc etc.
They are still accepting donations, having reached their target. The average donation is £15 and some of the comments are heartbreaking - like the family in Burnham-on-Sea who have offered the family their caravan for recuperation after the treatment.
