I left BT ( as my phone/broadband provider) some years ago, but retained the btinternet.com email address. A year or so back, I was informed that I wished to retain this address it would cost me a nominal monthly fee, which ( versus the huge inconvenience of changing me email address and notifying the change to everyone) I agreed to pay. Now I've been informed this charge is to increase to £5 a month !! This seems utterly ridiculous.Ive contacted BT and they say there're an internet provider, not an email provider - what ??!! So I'm blackmailed into paying this fee ! Anyone had this same charge levied, or any suggestions how to avoid paying it ? Or Is my only other option to go through the hassle of changing the address ?
I had a similar problem when O2 left the ISP business and were taken over by Sky. I switched to BT internet.
To be fair to O2/Sky they let me use the email address for maybe a year before cutting it off.
I migrated to a gmail account.
It is hassle to change over email addressed but at least you reduce the spam.

just change. I did when I moved internet from them. A gmail account is fine, in fact you should open more than one. I have separate accounts for finance stuff, gambling stuff, and social media etc. It is a hassle to get started but worth it.

In my experience BT are like vultures....they will pick every piece of flesh off you if allowed. Having said that I have phone and broadband with them because even though Sky offered me eighteen months free broadband if I swithed my line rental to them but I couldn't be doing with the hassle of changing my E.Mail address.
Just far too many people and companys to inform. Having said that, I used Sky's offer as a bargining chip when I phoned them to renew my contract and pay £8 per month for unlimited which I think is reasonable.
The 'better deals ' department's direct line is 01324 452504. I don't know if it would be worth phoning them in your situation but anybody with BT should perhaps write down the number and use the Sky ploy like I did when renewing their contract.
They can only say no in which case I might have given Sky my buisness.
