An odd mnemonic because the opposite sounds just as reasonable: spring back, fall forwards.

People in Britain do say the fall.

Twice a year when they refer to the clocks being changed.

Lots of people used "the fall" on the racing forum this week when that hoarse unshipped his rider when clear just before the winning post. Other words were also used.

Metals (including springs) spring back to their original shape if you bend them

I thought it was spring out of bed when you realised you've lost an hour.
And fall back into bed when you realise you've got another hour to go.
