Quite a charming little fellow called Toby. A stray who was rescued after being attacked by a wild boar apparently in deepest Andalucia.I shall look after him in the finest chit chat tradition. He shared some our Iberico Secreto last night and seemed to enjoy it. Happy

that backstory sounds contrived? 'Deepest Andulucia' are they importing wounded dogs into britain.. with quarantine rules?

Fake news.

I put him out for the night and let him back in this morning. It's a bit nippy at the moment during the night around Granada but the lad seems to have fared well.I suppose he's used to much worse.

You put him outside overnight, in the cold?

Would you like it if someone did that to you?
Report GoOnThen February 26, 2017 3:26 PM GMT
He has a basket outside. I think it's the way out here. When I was a youngster in South Yorkshire my dog slept outside in a kennel.
Report Makybe_Diva February 26, 2017 3:32 PM GMT
It might be the way but I don't think it's the right way to treat a pet dog.

Outside kennels (heated in cold weather) is ok for working dogs.

My dog would sleep outside all year round if I let her. As long as they have access to three walls and a roof somewhere in the yard, they're happy. Their circulation is completely different to ours.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2085646/Dogs-paws-warm-frozen-ground-special-circulation-system.html

The only reason I bring her in is that I'm happier that she's there with me to provide an alert against intruders, being deaf myself. And I need her to let me know the alarm's gone off when necessary. But it's a right pain getting her to come in of a night sometimes. She'd be much happier remaining out in the frost keeping watch for mice, foxes, badgers etc.
Report Mc Moonbeam February 26, 2017 4:45 PM GMT
I guess it depends on the type of dog
My old man used to buy 2nd hand sofas especially for the dogs to sleep on , as soon as one popped off another would jump up to take it's place , good idea if you have a few dogs , he'd just bin them after a while & buy a 'new' one for like £15
Report GoOnThen February 26, 2017 5:06 PM GMT
There is also the gata de casa to consider. She has the run of the house. There is a dog lead hung up here but I'm guessing it's had less use than Diane Abbots step machine!

Some of them do have an obsession with accessing sofas.

25 years ago I got a couple of mutts from Heaven's Gate Animal Sanctuary in the Mendips, and decided that this time I was going to put my foot down and not have my furniture ruined by dogs. They were quite an old pair, 7 and 9 years old, and had been in the cage at the sanctuary for nearly a year, so I thought they'd have been weaned off home comforts. No chance. I opened the living room door to let them in, and before I had a chance even to suggest they might prefer the beds I'd provided, they'd trotted straight over to the settee, curled up together and never once used the beds in the subsequent 8 or 9 years I had them.

It became a matter of principle that any sofa was theirs. They were staying at my parents' once, with my dad on one end of their sofa and one of the dogs asleep next to him and no room for the other one. So the latter went and stood in front of an armchair, which had some luggage resting on it, and kept looking from the armchair to my dad and back again. In the end my dad got up to move the luggage, so the dog could use the armchair, whereupon the dog jumped straight up onto the sofa, settled down and shut his eyes.

I stayed in a nice e place on Friday night, Cortijo Sabila, featured a few times on TV. The owners have 4 dogs, two airedales brought from the UK, one abandoned dog from the local town, which they brought back home after a couple of shopping trips, and one neighbours dog who'd worn its teeth down trying to bite through the metal chain it was tethered to 24/7.Some kind people out there. Let's not despair. Toby will be sleeping inside if he rocks up tonight.

My dog died four weeks ago. She was being sick on the Saturday, and died in the early hours of Sunday morning. I obviously wish I'd took her to the vets, but it didn't seem too bad at the time. I also wish I'd been offered/asked for a post mortem to be carried out, because the not knowing what killed her is quite hard to take. Cry

It's amazing how much a dog can become part of a family. Happy

Commiserations, Kenbo.

Don't be hard on yourself. If we took our dogs to the vet's every time they puked, we'd be permanent residents there. It's one of their charms that they consume just about anything, seemingly relying on vomiting to sort out what they shouldn't.

And these things ALWAYS seem to happen on a Saturday, so we think, if it's still the same on Monday morning, then I'll know something's wrong, and I'll go to the vet's then. Just about every time they turn out to be right as rain by Sunday morning. I don't think anyone would have done anything different to what you did. I certainly wouldn't.
