Just took a hot tray out of the oven using a reasonably thick towel, done it many times before. Forgot the towel was damp as I'd mopped up a spill earlier.
Virtually instantly burned myself! Not 100% sure why, I'm guessing the water is a good enough conductor of heat to quickly scald me, or the dampenss had compessed the fibres.
Or Brexit.
Anyway .. Don't do it children, unless an adult is there to supervise. With pain cream.
i didnt believe you when i read it but ive googled it and you are right, the dampness acts like a wick for the heat, you learn something new every day.

Oven gloves were invented by Earl Mitt of Austin, Texas, in the early 1870s. He was a frequent baker of Gugelhupf cakes and permanently disfigured his left hand in a baking accident. To prevent further injury to himself, and the injuries of the many generations to come, he crafted a rudimentary oven "mitt" made of wool and shoe leather. He slowly refined his design over the years, experimenting with various arrangements of finger compartments and different insulating materials.
