Rights groups have filed a lawsuit in a New York court to demand the release of two refugees in transit who have been detained at John F Kennedy airport.

Entry to the US for nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries has been stopped for 90 days by President Trump.
The exact implications of his order remain unclear. The US State Department has told the BBC it is working on the immediate implementation of the ban.

People fleeing Syria are banned until further notice.
The other countries affected are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

The two Iraqi refugees detained in New York were in transit when the executive order was signed on Friday.
One of them, Haneed Khalid Darweesh, who had worked as a US Army interpreter, was released on Saturday afternoon.
The other man, Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, remains in detention.

New York Representative Jerry Nadler tweeted that he and fellow Democratic Representative Nydia Velazquez were working to help 11 more refugees still being held.

The National Immigration Law Centre (NILC) told the BBC that it was suing President Donald Trump and the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Mark Doss, a lawyer for the two Iraqis, spoke to the BBC from Terminal 4 at JFK, where he had been since Friday evening trying, and failing, to see his clients:

"It's just absolutely disgraceful that we would be turning back and detaining the most vulnerable individuals in the world - individuals who have served our country, are fleeing from persecution and have valid status, only to be detained without an attorney at their port of entry [to the US].

"And so we believe this order is unconstitutional and we will be fighting it."
Several other rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), are involved in the lawsuit, filed on Saturday morning.

The United States deported 90 Somalis and 2 Kenyans back to their home countries Wednesday, after they had spent time in detention centers and prisons.

African News reported the deportees included 86 men and 4 women.  Two Kenyan women were dropped off at the airport in Nairobi, then the plane went on to Mogadishu, Somalia.

Ahmed Isse Awad, Somalia’s ambassador to the U.S., confirmed that some of the immigrants had been denied asylum, while others were convicted criminals who had been ordered out of the United States.

The migrants were returned via an American Charter Airlines plane.

The mass deportation occurred just two days before President Trump signed an execute order at the Pentagon Friday, cracking down on refugees coming into the United States.

The executive order suspends all visa entries from seven countries who are mostly Muslim and have known ties to terror, including Somalia, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Yemen.

The order also mandates an extreme vetting process for all immigrants and visitors to the U.S., suspends all refugee admissions for four months, and indefinitely halts almost all Syrian refugee admissions.

In the uk we would had funded their objection, then they would had mentioned the right to see their family. It would had cost millions and they would had stayed for years. Or they would had claimed to have no ID.

SUPERB

Report brockville January 28, 2017 10:10 PM GMT
I seemed to have missed the demonstrations and outrage.

Donald Trump has received much flak from Democrats and Republicans alike for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S through executive authority. However, the past six presidents have all used the executive power to bar different classes of immigrants.

Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 states: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

Barack Obama has used the authority this statute provides six times in his tenure. In July 2011, Obama barred the entry of “anyone under a UN travel ban; anyone who violates any of 29 executive orders regarding transactions with terrorists, those who undermine the democratic process in specific countries, or transnational criminal organizations.”

In April of 2012, he barred the entry of anyone “facilitating computer or network disruption that could assist in or enable serious human rights abuses by or on behalf of the government of Iran and Syria; anyone who have sold or provided goods, services, or technology to Iran or Syria likely to be used for such purposes; or to have materially assisted anyone whose property or interests are described.”
