Thanks for posting on my thread, guys
How come I had never heard of these great bands until now?
Maybe it's because I never listen to the radio

Ooh good choice, one of my favourite bands, totally underrated. Follow You Down, Hold me down, Competition Smile are amongst my favourites. Some of their stuff is a bit filler but made up for by the good stuff. Their first 2 (proper) albums, New Miserable and Congratulations are far better than the later two.
Doug Hopkins (who wrote Hey Jealousy and a lot on NME) had a drink problem and was fired/left, shot himself .
Acoustic version of Competition Smile here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oystUFU4cs

M_D The reason I posted that one is that it's an acoustic version a lot of people (including fans) probably haven't heard. It's on their album, and still one of my favourites, but in the non acoustic version.
Re Doug Hopkins, he had a drink problem which can lead obviously to depression, but I think he was even more depressed that the Gin Blossoms were hitting big success with singles like Hey Jealousy etc and he had written them. Apparently he got sent a gold disk and hung it up then destroyed it. But to be fair to the rest of them, he was apparently drinking so much they just couldn't work with him anymore, I don't think they did it lightly.

They are called the Gin Blossoms, not Blossoms, not sure why she dropped the Gin Part!
Makes them sound like they should be playing a gig at a side stage at Woodstock, not playing banging rock tunes to a discerning [middle class] audience :P

LOL they are two different bands, I didn't click on the links and just saw people listing off Gin Blossoms lyrics and songs :)
Me bad
Ok maybe two great bands, never listened to the other one (but will now, to cover for my sins)

Listen to blossom sing "the stately homes of England, how beautiful they stand "
And Neil Young singing the first line of ' Like a Hurricsne ' ... " once I thought I saw you, in a crowded smokey bar "
Now Young wrote his masterpiece in the 70s, 80s ? they will have heard it yep.

Just watching my own link and thought how much I liked the bass, during the chorus....and then thought who is playing that!?
Any music experts out there tell me?

Thanks, Dan. I should apologise, it looks like I got my links confused...
I was referring to this 'Later' performance of Catch The Sun

where he is playing an acoustic.

Ah ok, I've looked at that link and I'm as baffled as you. Jimi is obviously playing acoustic, Andy Williams on drums and Martin Rebelski on keyboards. Jez Williams is playing rhythm guitar so if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say the bass line is being played on the keyboard or on a tape.

Cheers Dan. I am no expert, but came up with those same two options. I couldn't think how a tape could be 'timed' to coincide with the live music but I am sure there are ways. I am sure you could do bass on a keyboard, but the guy appeared to be playing other stuff when on camera.
