I don't think that is entirely true. Most people knew nothing of the holocaust until after the war when the true horror of it was revealed.
Britain and France were fighting for freedom from an aggressive neighbour and his poodle, hell-bent on the conquest of Europe by force. This also became true of the Soviets after Hitler betrayed the pact with Stalin.

I think there is a deliberate attempt to misrepresent WW2, more so as the older generation dies out.
One of my neighbours used to bring her daughter for help with Maths and English tuition. One day she showed me what she had learned about WW2 in history. She thought the main event was about Ann Frank and had written an essay on it. Now I know that was a tragic incident but I hadn't heard of Ann Frank until about 50 years after the end of the war and I am sure it wasn't about her at all.
