Three-time Derby-winning jockey Walter Swinburn has died at the age of 55.
Swinburn, who had been suffering from epilepsy, died peacefully at home. One of the most gifted jockeys of his generation, Swinburn will forever be associated with the great 1981 Derby winner Shergar who he rode to victory when only 19 years old. |

Also popular former BBC weatherman Ian McCaskill passed away too, today

Oh Jesus H Christ, that is absolutely shocking news.
![]() My favourite ever memory of horse racing was bunking off school in 1981 to be on the Epsom Downs to watch Shergar. I was on the rails at the furlong marker as Walter Swinburn and Shergar breezed by to win by 10 lengths. Just so sad, 55 is absolutely no age. R.I.P. Walter Swinburn. |

wow no age is it

I saw him growing up, I suppose.
He was a fixture in my horseracing days for about thirty years, jockey and trainer. He seemed to be a nice person, quiet and just got on with job. RIP Walter |

Very sad to hear, I did not realise one could die from epilepsy, r.i.p
An extremely good jockey. |

Shocking :-(

Quite a lot of people die from epilepsy, ebulGery. An ex boyfriend of mine married a woman with it and he always had to watch over her while she had a bath because if she had a fit she could drown in the bath, as many do.

Oh that's awful, it wasn't reported earlier that it was epilepsy, so sad.

Swinburn shot to prominence as a 19-year-old after gaining the first of his Epsom Classic victories aboard the legendary Shergar in 1981.
The jockey, nicknamed the Choirboy, went on to win the Derby five years later aboard Shahrastani and again on Lammtarra in 1995. He also enjoyed international success, winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1983 aboard All Along on whom he also won the Washington DC International. More North American success came in the EP Taylor Stakes, a race he won twice, and the Breeders' Cup where he won the Turf aboard Pilsudski. He landed the 1000 Guineas with Musical Bliss (1989), Hatoof (1992) and the majestic Sayyedati in 1993, with his 2000 Guineas success coming through Doyoun (1988). Shegar won the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in his Derby year and Swinburn twice tasted victory in the Irish Derby, courtesy of Shareef Dancer in 1983 and Shahrastani in 1986 In 1987 he again teamed up with Stoute on the biggest stage to claim the Oaks aboard Unite 1987. Thankyou for the Memories... RIP Walter |

This was a shock. Great jockey who fought his demons (weight mainly) with grace. That Hong Kong smash must have left its mark. A bad period with Pat Eddery also gone too soon last year.
