Tickets for Adele - about 360,000 - sold out in 10 minutes.
It's been announced that you will only be admitted if you are the person named on the ticket. It's about time more artists took this approach - the real fans are either paying through the nose or are not getting to the event at all; and from a cold commercial point of view, if someone pays £200 (or more) for a £50 ticket, that's £150 that's gone into a spiv's pocket that could have been spent on merchendise or refreshments at the venue. The touts are using BOTS to hoover up thousands of tickets sometimes even before the official on-sale time. The USA are about to outlaw this practice whereby the normal computer selling channels are bypassed. Hopefully, we'll follow suit. Imo, there's nothing wrong with reselling tickets at a premium as long as the the touts compete on a level playing field instead of cornering the market and artificially inflating prices. |

There is another side to it, buy some tickets for friends for Theatre, Races, any event really and friends named on tickets can't make it for any reason and you cannot take anyone else, stuck with worthless tickets that have Benin paid for.

The touts and third party sites are happy to play the bad guy,
on behalf of themselves, the artist, management, promoters and venue .......and the dividends are shared out between them all. There are few innocent parties in the whole arrangement. |

And while they're at it, can they look at the rip off add ons.
Recently bought tickets for a gig and was charged £3 booking fee, £2 facilitation fee (WTF is that), and £2.50 delivery, even though I printed the tickets off myself. |

Someone rang in and booking fees can be up to £50 when buying through the normal channels.
Never realised that - I always thought they were around £3 - £5 . |

At least the touts' profits used to find their way to a worthwhile place in the old days, i.e. the betting Ring. Plumpton and Fontwell would have been a bit dull 20 years ago without Johnny Lights.

Nothing wrong with a secondary market for tickets - or anything else really.
But, what used to be a cottage industry has now been industrialised...instututionalised. If the music industry wanted to do something about it, they would do. They don't. It is crocodile tears. Has anyone ever had their ticket checked in this detail at a venue i.e. name on ticket compared with ID? |

As I hadn't been successful in getting any Olympics ticket, I bought a package for the Olympics in London from Thomas Cook. A right rip off. e.g. £100 hotel room and £80 in tickets about £500.
Very similar to these touting companies discussed above. Olympics guarantee thousands of tickets to 'travel' companies in exchange for a big wodge. They both benefit and Joe Public ends up getting ripped off. |

This doesn't need government intervention.
If a band want to avoid touts they just need to follow Adele's policy here If they don't mind touts acting as intermediaries then they should be allowed to. They're putting on the show, and they can decide if special fans need a little help through fan clubs, or not if they don't care. The free market has this covered. |

Kate Bush did the same thing in only allowing in people named on the ticket with her 2014 Hammersmith residency.

Yes the name thing definitely does work as per Glastonbury, Kate Bush, etc. Arcade Fire have done it too as have Radiohead. This really should become common practice for any big gig/event. It would reduce touting considerably.

Surely you could have a return policy if required and sell any returns at the box office on a first come, first served basis on the day of the event.

The Chaser, if the named person on the ticket can't make it on the day it's tough. You should know you can make it when booking tickets. Or alternatively as Pixie says maybe a returns policy where you only get the money refunded if the tickets are re sold.

What ID is required to get in along with those tickets ? Does a bank card work ? What a about a birth certificate ?

You get your money back with a returns policy, if you are convinced you can pass on your ticket to a mate at cost price you would think it would be a doddle for the box office to move it on at cost price wouldn't you? I can't imagine any band who are in a position to make touts a profit because demand outstrips supply would have any objection. It seems such an obvious, simple solution. I think you're creating problems when there aren't any, The Chaser. |

It's all a marketing con. Why not just go back to the days of buying the ticket from the venue and cutting out the middle man?

Tickets for The Rolling Stones in Las Vegas on October 19th, 20,000 tickets sold out by the second day, but lot of tickets available on the resale market on 3rd party site. Originally priced up to about £750 and being offered for about £4,000. This was on a Wednesday night....and then another show was added on the Saturday night because so much demand for tickets.
The Wednesday night show at the new T-mobile arena was cancelled the day before because 'Mick Jagger had laryngitis'. Although he seemed to make a quick recovery because the Saturday night show went ahead. But rumours in Las Vegas, the arena and Rolling Stones management caved in to pressure to cancel the Wednesday show. Because the final TV debate between Trump & Clinton was being held nearby and big security worries.  |
