Lets be honest the people who have taken this to court have only one motive and that’s to delay the Brexit proceedings in the hope something might come up that will change the electorates mind (she might be right). Had she and her co-conspirators said this from the start instead of hiding behind some obscure ideal of protecting the integrity of Parliament , whilst disagreeing with her, I might have at least give her credit. Once the wheels were set in motion then the judiciary have to have their say. Its the Law of the Land which we all have to live by. Whoever has been charged with abusing her will also have to live with the same Law,,,,,,and so should the Guardian Reporter who wanted a "Presidential assassination "and for the same reasons. The Law is made to look stupid when it pursues one person for transgressing but conveniently forgets another

I'm quite suspicious of May - I'm not given to conspiracy theories - least of all create one of my ownLaugh, but I could never shrug off the feeling she is really a remainer; but her own ambitions supersedes the remain/leave argument.

I can't really back-up what I'm saying (other than she was "remain" at the referendum). All the nonsensical sound-bites "Brexit is Brexit", and now this "Red, White and Blue Brexit" nonsenseCry - is for show. She knows the Supreme Court will uphold the High Court decision (as it should). But imo its just more posturing. Is she perhaps playing for time, really hoping legal delays give time to allow events (dear boy, and all of that) to somehow complicate matters, whilst its not seen as her or her party's fault, as they are viewed as clearly trying to implement Brexit?

Or at least, give them more time to figure a possible end-game, they are without a strategy, and that is because the wont/cant get what they want most, access to single market, so the preferred end-position is not known, therefore you can't have a strategy).

Deep-down I think, if this all just "went away" she wouldn't be disappointed.

Theresa May had a month or so to canvass for the leadership before taking over, she then had to appoint a cabinet and approach a massively complicated situation from scratch (40 years of intense integration of laws)that had zero consideration from our supposedly competent civil service and now contends with sustained backstabbing from within and without ? I admire her approach to assess the problems fully before diving in and getting everything wrong, she is different class to the greasey crew that went before.

Leaving aside the rather silly analogies, the fact that us leaving would be punishing was one of my big reasons for voting remain. The EU has its faults, of course it does, but I believe we're better in it and influencing it than being on the outside. And the very act of leaving will almost certainly mean we get a trade deal that reflects that fact and is a deterrent to anyone else with similar notions.

Report PorcupineorPineapple December 8, 2016 1:31 PM GMT
I think you're dressing it up but yes, you're essentially repeating what I said originally. We will not get a favourable deal as to do so will encourage others to do the same. They'll hardly set out to ruin us, but they're interest is in getting the best for the EU so, for example, they'll be all for the banks looking to re-locate to Frankfurt or somewhere else within Europe as has been mentioned today again as it strengthens them and also is a tangible and real loss for the deserter.

It may not be pretty but politics and business rarely are.
Report Platini December 8, 2016 1:37 PM GMT

It's simple Ozy, we import more from the EU than we export to them.
Report Ozymandius December 8, 2016 7:13 PM GMT
Yes,  but UK imports are spread (unevenly) between 27 countries...therefore the EU loss is diluted per country .

If the Uk and EU stop trading (hypothetical situation for the purposes of illustration) the damage to say France is sustainable (loses one trading partner)), wheras the UK is wiped out (having lost 27 trading partners).

That is why the UK has more to lose and the EU is in the stronger negotiating position.
Report akabula December 8, 2016 7:21 PM GMT
Do you think the leaders of the individual countries will think like that?
I don't.
But even if they did they'd hardly wipe out the UK which can now trade with the world.
UK companies would also have to look to within for trade which might hamper choice but again it wouldn't ruin the UK.
Report Burton-Brewers December 8, 2016 7:22 PM GMT

Tariffs cause difficulties if they are right across the board of a nations economy. They can be used selectively by an independent country. Without tariffs a country can find it is difficult for new companies to get established. Tariffs if used correctly can help these fledgling businesses become established.
This was very important when Britain and other countries first became industrialised.
Tariffs can lead to an explosion of new buisnesses and jobs because it gives infant companies a chance to gain a foothold.

Spite and malice maybe threatening from Brussels petulance but weakness (mostly from Remainer  whingers) will only encourage them,a robust response to call their bluff will get national governments to impose their wills on Brussels and force the to shut up.A tit for tat tarrif response will stop Brussels in it's tracks, they really do have more to lose although the childish behaviour from Brussels may suggest otherwise.
