Amazingly he only appeared in THREE episodes of Porridge, according to the obituaries. That is some impact!! A critic said he could convey menace reading the weather forecast. Anyone remember him in A Warning to the Curious: one of those M R James Ghost stories often shown on Christmas Eve in the Seventies?. RIP
Will raise a glass during my annual viewing of that Porridge Christmas Special.

Meant to add to my previous post, and I do not wish to be overly sensitive, but I think he would rather be remembered as Peter Vaughan the actor, not "Grouty" (three sit-com episodes and a poor film) in a very long and distinguished TV, Film and Theatre career.
Yes....was good as Mr Helpman in Terry Gilliam's film Brazil.
He might not be too upset to be remembered as That Bloke Who Played Grouty> From an interview earlier this year:
“I was in just three episodes and, of course, the feature film, so I have to thank the writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais for the fact I’m one of the characters people always remember when they talk about Porridge because Grouty is so prominent — even though I’m not there.
“Everybody’s frightened to death of him, so they talked about him a lot and so it was a huge character but I didn’t have to be there.”
But, as Peter admits: “I more or less accidentally turned up in something special.
“I was in a play and they asked me to do Porridge, and it was very nice to be able to do something in the daytime and then go back and do the play at night.
“Had I not been in the play, I wouldn’t have done it as there weren’t enough episodes to make it financially worthwhile and it would have clashed with more lucrative work.
“But the scripts were brilliant and I loved the part.
“It was an unlikely setting for a sitcom, a bunch of men in prison, but more power to it and I think it’s a classic and it will be remembered for a very long time.

Just watched the episode the other night on CH Yesterday when he asks Fletcher to get him some pills. Great stuff and to be honest I never knew the man was still alive. A fine actor by all means.
Grouty was the real star of the Porridge film.

One of the best things that has ever been on the box. Though I did forget that he was in it!
It did bring to prominence some good actors like Daniel Craig and Christopher Ecclestone.

He'll be up there now viewing this thread... and cursing the fact that many people only remember him for a minor roll in Porridge.
Crags - even assuming your assessment is correct, wouldn't it be best best to post something that pays tribute to his skills.

A little known fact about the late PG is that as well as being a fine actor, he was also very good at DIY.
He was kind enough to take on the job of tiling my bathroom and a great job he made of it as well.

No-one likes to mention that anymore after the tempestuous fling with Chit Chat heroine Queenie Watts. I saw those two at the Old Vic many years ago in a special one-off performance of 'Macbeth On Ice", Vaughan cast as a re-imagined schizophrenic Macbeth, a member of the Alloa Athletic Reserves side who had delusions of a lifer as powerful as Harry Grout, with Watts superb as Macbeth's wife, the scheming Mrs Mackay (who was feeding back all his imagined criminal info to a Mr Barrowclough).
A fantastic production, scripted by Harold Pinter. Long-overdue for a new Millennium appraisal. I know it was on sale as a VHS at one time but they are probably unobtainable now.
