Has anyone suffered from this and if so what is the best way to treat/manage it? I had a bursal tear which has now been diagnosed as frozen shoulder and it is causing me no end of grief. Thanks in advance.

No casemoney, I've got surgery on January 3rd for the knee
and now have got a bad shoulder injury, I'm falling to pieces !

I'll look at that site xmoneyx, thank you. The G.P. was rather indifferent and referred me for physio but have heard nothing yet.

In my recent experience of physio is they just tell you to do a few exercises at home and kick you out, no hands on treatment. I used to be super fit Sad That ship has sailed.

I had trouble with my hip slippy a couple of years ago and I saw a physio. They put some sort of torch thing on it that fired waves into the joint, could have been ultrasound but I can't remember now. It only took 2 sessions and it was fine.

If these measures are unsuccessful, manipulation of the shoulder under general anesthesia to break up the adhesions is sometimes used   ShockedSad

Think I was getting it mixed up with tennis Elbow ,sounds dreadful ,and pain worse at night due to lack of movement ..

Sore thing,i had it a couple of years ago, your arm is literally locked and couldn't even raise it.
I remember bumping the arm into something and nearly blacking out with the pain.
I went to the doctor fairly early with it and two steroid injections sorted it, won't get better on its own for a long long time.
Have doubts massage and that will clear it.

Physio  is the key to this. Often it's a result of a trapped nerve from swollen muscle tissue.
I had similar many years ago which affected my neck.
Ten X 1 hour weekly  treatments involving stretching the muscles to release the nerve. Use of pulleys and weights. Felt like torture, being stretched on a rack.
Worked though !

I had terrible problems with my right shoulder. Couldn't lift my arm at all , eventually went the docs who put me on anti inflame tablets and gave me a series of exercises to do

Amazing improvement but still not quiet right

I used to have it long time ago.

The substance that made it go away is:  DMSO
Dimethyl sulfoxide

Had it 10 years ago

Physio had only limited effect

Went to see shoulder specialist. Had a manipulative op under gen anaes - essentially they just yank it.

Exercises done immediately afterwards for several weeks

No probs since

Had it about a decade ago after falling off my bike. GP referred me to a physio at the local hospital, who prescribed some exercises with weights and pulleys at the gym there. I went for about 3 or 4 weekly sessions, which gradually improved it, and then I just continued the exercises at home, as the improvement meant the equipment was no longer needed to perform the movements.

Basically hold both arms straight against your sides, then bend them both upwards at the elbow, so each forearm is extended forward at a right angle to the upper arm.

From this position there are two exercises you can do, which gradually loosen the frozen shoulder. One is to twist both forearms outward and away from the body through an angle of 90 degrees (or as much as you can manage in your current state). Keep the elbows touching the sides of the waist and the forearms at right angles while doing this.

The other is to keep both arms in the initial position, with the forearms extended at right angles, then lift each whole arm up together at the same time, keeping the elbows bent at right angles, until both upper arms are on a straight line extending out from the shoulder and the forearms are still pointing forwards at right angles. Again, do the movement as far as you can at first.

Note that you have to do these exercises with both arms simultaneously to be effective, even though only one shoulder is frozen.

I'm not claiming these exercises are the best or only solution, but they worked really well and relatively quickly for me, and I never needed any surgery or medication.

On the other hand I was only 45 when it happened. God knows how long it would take to recover now, 10 years older.

My sympathies slippy.
I have a frozen shoulder... among other bits of fecking annoyance and misery (list to follow).

My GP gave me a steroid injection for it a couple of months back, it doesn't work in 30% of cases though. I'm in that 30% Sad
Well, to be more specific it seems to have moved a bit, that is where I couldn't reach behind me, say to put a seatbelt on, now I can't throw things and stretch.
She has suggested exercises and sort of physio at home. and it is easing a bit, to be fair.
However.
My psoriasis (already quite bad) has taken a turn for the worse and the skin specialist seems to think steroids sometimes exacerbate the problem. So I'm on VERY strong pills to try to alleviate that. Cry I'm thinking of stopping the pills though because the side effects might be worse than the psoriasis. CryCry
They're not good for already slightly buggered Kidneys. CryCrySad Though the blood tests said I should be able to tolerate a small dose.

Anyway I'll have to stop for a while for my pending operation to laser and remove some pretty bad varicose veins and hopefully cure the leg ulcer which has been getting steadily worse and been very very unceasingly painful for months now. SadCrySad

This could be caused by the relatively recently diagnosed diabetes which I tend not to take too seriously and was discovered following a nerve issue which was never cured or diagnosed despite Mri's and lumbar puncture.SadCryCrySadCry

On top of all this I've been to the dentist for the 1st time in years because they always hurt CryCry and the mass of injections he gave me have buggered my jaw and over the last 2 weeks it's getting worse... can't open my mouth wide SadCryCrySadSadCry

and talking of bad seasons, you want to try supporting my lot!!!!!!

I guess what I'm saying is that no-one tells you that getting older is no fun and that things start wearing out, breaking and seizing up. Getting my problems off my chest is a sharing thing, btw. I really do have sympathy and can only repeat what everyone says to me.

Try to avoid the stress and it's all fixable, you'll feel better in a few weeks.

I have had 6 cortisone injections this year STUDYFORM, three in my knee, three in my shoulder. They kick in after a few days but wear off after a few weeks. I don't take painkillers as they have no affect. I have always been a sportsman but I Sadcan't even contemplate a game of golf as things stand.

Correct me if I'm wrong slip, but I think there's a limit to the number of injections you can have anyway. I reckon you've reached it.

I tried my 1st game of golf in about 6 years 4 weeks ago (just 9 holes). Shoulder wasn't too bad, it hurt more picking the ball out of the hole than swinging the club.
Really really really useless doesn't begin to describe how terrible I was.

When it's cold and rainy, you're not missing much B-B. Although I guess I'm coming across a bit whingy!

Try to keep the arm in motion somehow until you see the physio, even if not through a round of golf. It's possible that one reason I was lucky enough to clear up my frozen shoulder quite readily just by doing the exercises is that I collect and cut up all my own firewood. This meant that until I realized the shoulder needed seeing to I was still regularly lugging home branches, wielding a bow saw and swinging my enormous chopper.

On the other hand I couldn't get anything off the top shelf in shops for months, which played havoc with the other obvious way of exercising the arm.

I fell a few years ago and landed on my palms ruddy hard. Something snapped in my arm ligaments? or muscles.hot wave hit me and nearly fainted.  Got a tear in my left arm that just keeps repeating , never gets better. I read that surgery might fix it but my doctor won't entertain it? i cannot lift anything longer than five minutes? I swim to strengthen it, but it's nackered. Amino Acids seem to help to build muscle, if you stick to veg it might improve. I bought something called l-arginine to help it(holland n barret). But I can't say it helped. recently improved with eating oats with flavoured yogurt. you can be a purist and eat it with super healthy kefir but you have to be able to eat the raw oats, get it past the throat. Don't boil oats. You'll FK it up for natural resource.
It's ruddy hard to get good building blocks in your food. The vitamin content is non existent. all the mineral rich soils are being replaced by factory like practices. Farming Outlook was an insight into farming practices in the seventies, it's moved on at a pace. food is now just lacking in all nutrients.

My enormous chopper usage isn't a problem for my shoulder (thank goodness), but the reaching to the top shelf is exactly what's happening now.

I think, zorro, some things cannot be fixed by food alone.

Slippy, I have old spinal injuries and while physios did nothing for it, Osteopathy was the key. Also key is finding a good one, they are like any trade and some are so much better than others. My man teaches at Leeds Uni and a lot of his graduates are in London, give me a shout if you'd like a recommendation.
