That's wrong she did get enough votes.

It was the way they were distributed that beat her.

Just Checking - you are right, but what is amusing about the US Result is that President Trump has almost certainly won because of the effect of the "electoral college" system.  A system he tweeted two days ago as a "disaster for democracy".   Some systems you win, some systems you loseWink.
Report Just Checking November 10, 2016 12:07 AM GMT
TBH their electoral college think doesn't make any sense to me?
For our MPs breaking things up into areas DOES make sense, as they area representative, but for them .. why not just tally up all the votes for this one?
Report Just Checking November 10, 2016 12:08 AM GMT
area was supposed to be "are A"!! Damn my sh1t space bar.

Report blackbarn November 10, 2016 12:15 AM GMT
JC - If you really want to know the history and complexity of the electoral college system, you can look it up. I wouldn't recommend it at this time of nightWink.  Re the tally-up, I am not sure you mean what you say as your recommendation may result in a Clinton victory - there is still a good chance that she will get more (popular) votes than him.  In fact, he could be only the second President since the 1880's(?) to lose the popular votes and be elected. Guess the other one??

Report Just Checking November 10, 2016 12:22 AM GMT
That's what I meant blackbarn, I wasn't being partisan. The votes are AFAIK just to elect the president, why not just add them up, why have intermediate grouping of votes in 2016 that distort it? I suppose it makes better entertainment but ...! I can only think it made sense 100 years ago.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:33 AM GMT
it works because it is a system to find the president that best represents the country, not that represents the individual.

it is an attempt to find what the country wants, not what the individual wants.
democracy is not about the individual vote, this is what people don't understand about democracy.
Report blackbarn November 10, 2016 12:39 AM GMT
lfc - I can entirely understand why you might want to justify this aged and unjustifiable system, but you do need to defend it in more detail even if just for my benefit.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:41 AM GMT

Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:45 AM GMT
the president is there to represent the whole of the country, it is not really about the individual. it is very democratic.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:47 AM GMT
now we have a lot of very rich and wealthy people in California and New York, I do not want them electing the president while the average working man in vast areas of the states never have a say.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:49 AM GMT
Its complicated, but in general it works very well.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 12:52 AM GMT
America is a very big country, the American president must represent all of it.

Report blackbarn November 10, 2016 1:01 AM GMT
Thanks lfc....Good stuff

So how is the system weighted to balance state vs individual?
Why is the system not the same for all states?
Is the process of candidates focussing on key "college" states conducive to good democracy?

Hillary deserved to lose the election.  She is a pathological liar and a thoroughly despicable person.  The Clinton campaign, aided by the Obama administration, fought a scaremongering campaign with the desperate intent of protecting their wholly discredited legacy.

Bernie Sanders would have beaten  Trump.
Report dustybin November 10, 2016 9:42 AM GMT
I don't have too much interest in the American voting system but I would have thought the value of college votes is linked to the number in that area, which is essentially just the same, there maybe a few extra bits to it but I'd be surprised if votes had differing values on anything other than numbers.

All politician's careers are doomed to end in failure, because the system is flawed having to attempt to cater to selfishness over altruism.
It generally means a fractural element occurs where parties get voted in and out in cycles when they simple don't seem to cut it.
On this occasion the rednecks won out and a new tactic has been used under the veil of anti establishment; they voted in somebody who has no knowledge or experience Laugh
Talk about out of the frying pan.

It's either likely to be hilarious or very scary once he has to start playing his hand.

Hillary Clinton did not get more votes than Trump. You could only say that if the election was being run on a different system and then we cannot be sure how the votes would go.
Because if the election had been run on a popular vote system then Trump and Hilary would have campaigned on that system and Trump would probably have won again.

Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 11:48 AM GMT
Let me explain, how people voted depends to some extent on how Trump and Clinton campaigned, where they campaigned, the nature and state of where they campaigned, etc now this has an effect on how people vote at least to some extent and in places like California a large extent.
If Trump thinks California is lost he will not worry if all the voters there vote Clinton, and this distorts the popular vote.
Report lfc1971 November 10, 2016 11:52 AM GMT
You will not get the BBC explaining that to you or me. They will be very careful not to , you have to be able to think for yourself, just a little bit.

We can't criticise the American voting system when the UK allows a party to get 4 million votes and only one MP.

Then another gets less than 1.5 million votes and 56 seats in Parliament.

And we think we've got democracy in the UK?

Now wonder there are plenty of commies like anxious left in politics.
