For the last 10 years, just about every election has been won:

By whoever tells the biggest lies.
By whichever candidate promises the most outrageous outlandish and unworkable changes to suit a demographic of C2, D & E voters, who would previously not have bothered voting.
By marketing.
By a (correct) reliance that most voters have very short memories.

Just when I thought it wasn't possible, I've woken up to a world which is even worse than it was yesterday.

I honestly believe a majority of people do not realise what they actually vote for.

Stirring hatred and garnering support by giving tiny pieces of power to those who have no idea what to do with it has been shown to work on a few recent occasions now and is a frightening sign of a return to the horrors the world should have learned from.

Just watch; the keyboard warriors, thugs, small groups and locally rewarded (for helping), will start to do their master's bidding and not just in the US. And it will go unpunished more and more and it will happen all over the world.

Once the xenophobia/tribalism is taken away there's nothing left.

Agree with the lying point, it has been lost by the media lying to the public with their agenda rather than reporting factual news.
Report Burton-Brewers • November 9, 2016 7:31 AM GMT
America is a very angry country The Don hasn't caused the anger but he is the voice of it.
Report Shab • November 9, 2016 7:32 AM GMT
Yeah. Because of course everybody knows politicians are always totally honest, and never, ever lie Cry
Report STUDYFORM • November 9, 2016 7:35 AM GMT
I didn't say the ONLY liar, shab, I said the BIGGEST ones.
B-B, not caused it, no. Stirred it up.

You could have 100 elections and the way they're being run, all over the shop, the results will be the same every time.
Report Ozymandius • November 9, 2016 7:41 AM GMT
Great opening post, SF.

A triumph for ignorance and the baser instincts of man.
Report Burton-Brewers • November 9, 2016 7:43 AM GMT
Study I have been going there on average twice a year since I was 8, most of my family lives there and even I have seen the changes especially in Baltimore. The anger was there long before Trump came along, I said back in July he would win you could feel it on the streets.
Report STUDYFORM • November 9, 2016 7:52 AM GMT
I lived there for a while, B-B.
The fact is that just a couple of hundred people in the USA possess nearly all its wealth and millions are in poverty.
Just like here, the blame is placed on those least able to defend themselves and the (rightly) angry people go to where the blame is placed and so the hatred and nastiness is perpetuated.

As I've said previously.

It's happened before. In many places round the world.
This is exactly how it starts.

Report lfc1971 • November 9, 2016 8:08 AM GMT
this was an election, you seem to think you understand more than the American people. Well they may be pretty smart. They happen to be the greatest country.
Report STUDYFORM • November 9, 2016 8:08 AM GMT
I'm about the fairest person you could ever wish to meet, lfc.
Report STUDYFORM • November 9, 2016 8:10 AM GMT
Just under 1/2 the voters voted for each of 2.
and I cannot think of many ways in which America is the greatest country, tbh
Report lfc1971 • November 9, 2016 8:11 AM GMT
I am glad and surprised and worried, everyone is is. But there is no point reelecting the same politicians who have made such an almighty mess of things.
Trump is honest, at least he knows things must change and the west must change.
Report lfc1971 • November 9, 2016 8:12 AM GMT
if you do not see that it is America and their tremendous creative power that our economy in Europe and the world relies on then you are blind and biased.
Report STUDYFORM • November 9, 2016 8:16 AM GMT
If you think Trump is honest, you're completely deluded. It is the absolute top of the list of adjectives that cannot be applied to him.

Creating what exactly?
Report lfc1971 • November 9, 2016 8:22 AM GMT
Studyform its there in black and white, the 20 century was the American century, they created everything.

people are being voted into power on waves of nationalism, zenophobia, isolationism & general distrust of mainstream politicians - i'm not suggesting that things are always great but the world is becoming ever more dangerous - you defeat the wrongs of the world by working together as a team not by mistrust & division
Report saddo • November 9, 2016 8:50 AM GMT
The anger has been building for a long time, do you think it would simply go away if not "stirred", Studyform, or might it actually keep growing and explode if ignored much longer?
Report akabula • November 9, 2016 8:53 AM GMT
Trump highlighted problems that were real and a conceren to most Americans.
Granted he could have been more diplomatic but I'm sure he's learned from his mistakes.
Report lfc1971 • November 9, 2016 8:54 AM GMT
Isolationism is a good thing, it makes people more honest.
Report Fenway • November 9, 2016 9:31 AM GMT
I despise all politicians with equal venom, Labour, Conservative, Republican, Democrat is a total irrelevance, they are all liars and low life bastards.

Trump is not a career politician, but he appears to be an especially rancid human being, so he will fit in well with the rest of the scum in Washington.

And one thing is for sure, if a policy is going to adversely affect the interest of (four time bankrupt) billionaire Donald J Trump, it will not be put in action.

er so what about trumps views on trade deals?
if we rely on those idiots then surely your views have to take on board that they are only gonna do deals which help their nation.

or as fenway says his companies.....
Report Mr.Anderson • November 9, 2016 10:03 AM GMT
I understand why many Americans aren't happy with the status quo, but would have been great if they had elected a champion who aren't as ignorant and dishonest as Trump. Someone who seems intent on starting trade wars and thinks global warming is a myth is hardly good news for the rest of the world. Hopefully he will be unable to put some of his most stupid ideas into practice.
