Had to force myself to continue watching, thought provoking and yet so difficult to watch. Should be compulsory viewing in our schools.

Why so, hearts? I doubt there's many kids thinking of going into slave trading as a career, and it was not their doing..

It's not an easy watch at all.

I watched a bit of it then turned it off.

Who wants to see black people being whipped and treated like cattle?

I can't imagine who would find entertainment in watching stuff like that.

As for showing it in schools. Shouldn't children be shielded from scenes of torture and brutality?

What do you want to do, traumatise them for life?

Agree, can't see the point of visiting the sins of past generations on youngsters of today. We'll be showing em bear baiting and witch burning next.

Read the book earlier this year , it was excellent in a terrible way.....I thought the film was hopeless , gave up after half an hour.

The book can be downloaded free of charge from Gutenberg.

You might want to read it in conjunction with "White Slavery In The Barbary States" which is also free.

Or the muslim raids on Ireland

or any number of the above in many parts of africa and the med?

Chronology a bit out there !

Slavery in America ended in 1865 , long after the Barbary Coast had become a French Colony.

They had stopped raiding ports in Britain and Ireland centuries before that as they could hardly compete with The Royal Navy.

The raids on Britain and Ireland were mostly early 1600s at a time when The Stuart monarchs were usually penniless and could not or would not fund a navy .

I believe the Arab and Turk pirates in any case mostly stayed in the Mediterranean  . The infamous captains who kidnapped people from fishing villages in Northern Europe were mostly Dutch (and even English) as were their crews . They 'converted to Islam' usually because they were outlaws that would be hanged if they set foot in Europe , and a port in a Muslim land was a safe haven and a place they could sell their captives.
