I watched a bit of it then turned it off.

Who wants to see black people being whipped and treated like cattle?

I can't imagine who would find entertainment in watching stuff like that.

As for showing it in schools. Shouldn't children be shielded from scenes of torture and brutality?

What do you want to do, traumatise them for life?

Agree, can't see the point of visiting the sins of past generations on youngsters of today. We'll be showing em bear baiting and witch burning next.

The book can be downloaded free of charge from Gutenberg.

You might want to read it in conjunction with "White Slavery In The Barbary States" which is also free.

Long after slavery ended in the US, women and girls were still being abducted from seashore towns in England and Wales by Barbary Coast pirates for use in the harems.

Chronology a bit out there !

Slavery in America ended in 1865 , long after the Barbary Coast had become a French Colony.

They had stopped raiding ports in Britain and Ireland centuries before that as they could hardly compete with The Royal Navy.

The raids on Britain and Ireland were mostly early 1600s at a time when The Stuart monarchs were usually penniless and could not or would not fund a navy .

I believe the Arab and Turk pirates in any case mostly stayed in the Mediterranean  . The infamous captains who kidnapped people from fishing villages in Northern Europe were mostly Dutch (and even English) as were their crews . They 'converted to Islam' usually because they were outlaws that would be hanged if they set foot in Europe , and a port in a Muslim land was a safe haven and a place they could sell their captives.
