I can't see a chip butty.

Surely that should be serious contender for the number one spot?

The ham sandwich gained notoriety as presented by British Rail...

One thin slice, on white bread, that was curling up at the edges!!!

Are we allowed hot ones? If so then a bacon and melted brie baguette is hard to beat.

All these suggestions and not one mention of avocado (unless I missed it) and I love chicken or tuna with avocado on a nice brown roll.

If hot sandwiches are allowed, I agree with JM's bacon & brie combo, closely followed by sausage & grilled halloumi. I'm proper exotic me Happy.

You could put a skinned and gutted lemming between two slices in a Breville toaster and someone would eat it.

Spent some time in the midlands, Cradley way. Shops there sold freshly carved hot pork/stuffing and gravy sandwiches. Delicious.

Some diced peppers go very nicely with tuna & mayonnaise. Do not under any circumstances add onion to tuna. It is the devils work.

wrt to the sandwich toaster - onions go well with cheese, but tomatoes warm to nuclear pop tart hot in a sarnie toaster!

Tin of John West mackerel fillets (the ones in the long, slim tin) on sourdough rye and butter. Flavour with few drops of lemon juice.
