You know

Back in the day it was "uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh, those dudes from the tribe 10 metres from here are horrible. They're savages, will not integrate and are stupid" (maybe not quite in those words)
Then that same thing applied to people from a neighbouring town, state, country, continent, you name it.
The Irish catholics in the USA faced heavy discrimination (actually it was the same with catholics and protestants over here in Europe), were considered drunk and violent thugs that will never ever integrate in the slightest and their women were slutty birth machines that were threatening the protestant majority. The men are still considered drunk thugs, but people don't really hate preach against the irish or catholics in general anymore.

People captured and enslaved other races and ethnicities, sometimes put them into zoo and wandering circus cages.

Then we claimed the money jews are trying to take over the world.

We've come through all that to see that the people from neighbouring tribes aren't actually all that bad and other races maybe should not be put into cages.

It's sad to see that humanity keeps doing the same thing over and over again, but slowly we expand our tolerance and are getting along a bit more each day. Given that we have expanded and learned about each other so much already, is it really that much of a unreachable utopia that one day we'll learn to all..you know....just hug? Why just be negative, give up and say "this will never come true" instead of working towards a good future for the planet? Will not be our generation, might not be our sons', but one day....wouldn't that be neat?

In Germany, areas with low immigration levels seem especially susceptible to a bit of xenophobia (I'd assume that's what the press does to you if you don't have a chance to actually meet immigrants).

You've probably heard about Pegida (if you haven't, an anti-islamisation protest group). Started and at its strongest in a state that had a whopping 0.1% muslims at the time. Will be more now, but still not that much. NPD (Germany's openly racist party) has its stronghold in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and there at its strongest around Anklam. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is over 96% white German. Don't know the number for Anklam, but even whiter than those 96%.

Would it be outlandish of me to think that similar dynamics could be true about other countries like the UK?

Lunatic Religious Types with murderous intent would find a way to get across borders either way. Do you know how much "green border" there is unless we build walls around our entire countries?

The GDR had one of the most tightly secured borders of all time. Walls, fences, armed guards, ordered to kill anyone who crosses without permission, mines and self-shooting devices. Cars literally being taken apart. Tighter controlled than anything imaginable today. Yet people were able to flee.
