Saw someone post yesterday with 1 Jan 00 joined date. Can't remember who or which forum though.
Report tobermory October 10, 2016 2:04 AM BST
Thta was some sort of glitch i think someone explained before, there were a few with that join date.

The forum began in June 2000 , there were 1 or 2 who still posted with that date a few years back

Possibly as many as 90% of the members who were here in 2011 have gone , so 2000 join dates must be thin on the ground

Betfair started in June 2000. There was an earlier exchange called Flutter which wasn't as successful and was later taken over by Betfair.

Checking wiki, the 1st series of Big Brother (Nasty Nick, etc) was the summer of 2000
and it captivated the nation. I remember massive fierce debates about it, on the Flutter Forum
(or it may have been this one)

There are places I remember all my life
Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
Of gambles and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I loved them all

Cool

Report alun2005 October 10, 2016 7:29 PM BST
On Flutter, the system even allowed you to try and goad people into accepting your bets. You could offer up some odds on a bet, and enter some remark along the lines of 'There's no way Arsenal/Man Utd/Chelsea etc can win this game' to try and bait backers.

I seem to recall offering over the odds on Lleyton Hewitt to win Wimbledon in 2001 and various easily-upset (presumably) Aussies taking them (and getting mullered). A good thing Flutter disappeared before Wimbledon 2002.

Can't remember the early days but I do remember fish night when the forum went into meltdown. 10 threads a minute were started on fish related subjects, I started one or 2 myself but it was the serial posters, and there were a few of them, that got banned. Lasted for about 3 hours, carnage in the morning.

Also remember picking a local radio station every week and phoning in trying to get the presenter to say Bet Fair or Chit Chat. I think George Galloway fell for one prank.

No, all the years you've been on here and made friends, but you always shy away of a meeting. Not even a photo or any evidence that you are female. We've had a few on here who have met forumites and also been more open about themselves in general and we know that they are indeed of the female persuasion, but not you, we are talking of girls like Zelda, Poker Q, Miss Jones, Runawaytrain, Galloping Carrot, the one who worked at Paignton Zoo but whose name I've forgotten, plus others.

Sorry about that, mate Sad

Do you know if Punterz still posts under a different username on any of the boards?  He was comical, always threatening folks.
Report crags October 11, 2016 1:15 AM BST
Can't say I do, Pokermonster, sounds like it could be a lot of people who've used multiple names.

Is it you? Grin
Report Pokermonster October 11, 2016 1:20 AM BST
God, no, he definitely wasn't me, sir.  Punterz came across as a horrible person, it just seemed amazing that he never seemed to get banned from the forum.

He used to pay folks to play poker under his account name to rack up the bonuses.
Report Pokermonster October 11, 2016 1:24 AM BST
My memory is a little hazy on whether it was the same member, but there was a famous incident where a photograph of another forumite's front doorstep was posted up in a thinly veiled threat.
Report crags October 11, 2016 1:27 AM BST

Didn't somebody change their name to something referring to the Liverpool comeback in the 2005 CL final (I can't remember what it was exactly) - it looked odd because their joining date was a couple of years before it had happened.

Don Butler - ex- course bookie ... well, he used to 'bet the aways' in the years before Betting Shops.

Punters at a race meeting could have a bet at another 'Away' meeting with such bookies - at 'under the odds, of course.

He posted as - lukehart - before he was cubone.

Started a website (www.cubone.co.uk) with many of his stories - but it ran out of bandwidth

Now, some of the stories are on Facebook - if you are a Facebooker - or Facebookist - or whatever.

https://www.facebook.com/Cubone-The-Gambling-Historian-111513965560221/

Don is now 80 - with only one working eye.

His son was married to Jodie Kidd - for a short while.
